My cousin Alex was a very sweet boy with an interest in engineering and sang in a traveling choir with St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Charlotte, which traveled all over the Southeast. He enjoyed video games, contemporary Christian music, movies, and he loved his dog. He was the very image of an average teenage boy, with one very important difference. Due to a disease that he was born with--type 2 SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy)--he has never been able to walk, and has spent his entire life in a wheelchair. He wasn't expected to live past his fifth birthday, but he did.

Someone asked him once if he ever wished he could walk....he told them no, because he was happy the way he was.* That proves, right there, how brave he was.

On Wednesday, March 5, 2008, Alex died at the age of 15.

In a way, he's very lucky. He didn't suffer for very long, and he'll never have to suffer again. And best of all, he'll never have to rely on a wheelchair ever again. For the first time, he'll be able to walk up to Aunt Francis and Uncle Frank and Grandmother to give them a hug and a kiss.

Give them one for all of us, Alex.

We love you.

You were always loved.
