A seemingly abandoned house on Godiva Street, Tuesday Morning

Jul 24, 2012 17:12

Since yesterday's meeting, Kate had spent the majority of the rest of the day informing everyone she could about the plan to take Detention on Saturday. And at the end of the day, she'd fallen into a bed that had seen better days in this house that had worked as a hideout for a few days now. Maybe if they were lucky, they'd manage to stay still ( Read more... )

"Z'there bacon?" Ace yawned from the top of the basement steps long after any music had ceased -- for the moment, anyway.

That was Ace for Good Morning -- and there had been bacon yesterday, toasted limply over a Sterno can, so it wasn't an unreasonable question.

None of their mornings were good, so that greeting works as well as anything.

"Don't know," Kate said. "Maybe, if Luke found some."

Ace took that in for a moment before rubbing her eyes and asking the even more important question. "Coffee? I can function without bacon, but god help us all if we're out of caffeine."

Kate nodded towards the supplies. "That I know we have." Though she herself couldn't muster up quite as much enthusiasm for it as she would have in the past. "Help yourself, Ace."

"Brill." She wasn't expecting anybody to have made it, even; she just needed the motivation of knowing it was there to actually drag herself up the stairs and emerge from her latest makeshift lab. "I've not quite done up the new batch of fireworks yet, but they should be ready by tomorrow. At least the more stable ones for folks to train with."

"Please don't blow anything up that you're not supposed to." It was a request Kate may have made several times before. But it was one of those things that really bore repeating from time to time. "The Wiggins wouldn't like that."

"Oi, when have I ever--"

Ace.

"Last week doesn't count. There wasn't supposed to be bread in that toaster."

"You know the rules," Kate drawled. "You live with people, you don't blow their shit up. And yes, it counts."

Ace waved a hand as she shuffled for the coffee pot. "All right, all right. No more testing on stuff from the kitchen; I already promised like three times. Not counting the frosting; you can't do cupcake bombs without frosting."

Kate got up to rummage through the stuff Luke had brought in last night. "And cupcake bombs are necessary because...?"

"You get caught with them, you can always say you were just making a delivery to brighten up old Dumbridge's day?" Ace rubbed at the faint quill-marks on her arm, which weren't at all readable anymore, but she wasn't likely to forget what they used to say. "Plus they toss well and I like seeing pink things explode."

"Well, whatever floats your boat or something," Kate muttered.

Her search through the bag produced pudding. She didn't quite smile, but she did sigh a little more softly. "Useful, I guess, assuming they don't explode in your pocket."

"Nah, they're pretty stable. Got to light the fuse to set 'em off." Styrofoam and no cream would have to do, but Ace didn't really care as long as the coffee was hottish and brownish, which it was.

It was nice and dependable like that. On most days, anyway.

"Well, I'm sure by now we've weeded out the idiots who can't do that without lighting themselves on fire," Kate drawled. "Anything else you're working on?"

"More nitro." Always and forever. "That doesn't go to the idiots."

"No, I suppose not." Said the girl who would be getting tased by Topher Brink before the day was out. "We're trying to avoid tragedy."

She hadn't been successful at that before (hence the slight sarcasm even there) but still.
