[Gem is sitting in a chair, her face unreadable. She's wearing a tight white suit that covers most of her body, the white circuits on it burning bright.]I require assistance. I am not what you Users call...human. There is much of this place I do not know the proper words for, nor the proper use for things ( Read more... )

[Not touching the clothing thing.]

What things do you need assistance with? Luceti is a reflection of Earth cultures and can be difficult to those used to more alien geography.

I have lived within a closed Computer System my entire life.

I know little of the bright world that most people exist in.

This is my first time seeing the Sun.

[That sparks some curiosity. He's never exactly encountered a computer civilization. But to say he's surprised would be overstating it. Not with his job.]

So you're more used to a more enclosed space, I take it. Or was your computer world networked to others?

It was not. But the Grid is larger than you could imagine.

[Beautiful, wide, expansive]

I wouldn't be so sure of that. I'm sure you've seen the night sky, correct? Each point of light is the same as the sun, but their distance from this world range in the hundreds of trillions of miles away. On my world, the closest star, aside from the Sun itself, takes over four years just for its light to reach Earth.

[The way he says it is not to imply any sense of superiority or to chastise her for not knowing these things. It's just a matter of fact and a sense of scale is useful.]

[And she looks a bit incredulous but...oh well]

Curious.

[She doesn't know what to say. She doesn't understand it.]

[Perhaps that was too much and without enough context.]

In any case, the universe does not have a size that can be imagined, because its size is infinite. So I have a fairly good grasp on how large your Grid could be.

If you have not seen it, how could you have a grasp on the size?

It is not simply the size of a computer.

I'm a Green Lantern. I've traveled to many worlds, across the universe.

[But now we're just quibbling.]

...you're a light source?

[Forgive her literal take on things.]

Yes. Quite a few. Mostly regarding the natural world here.

Negative. It's a title. My name is John Stewart.

I'll answer what I can.

Well, John, what does a Green Lantern do, then?

[tries to think of various questions. She has so many]

Explain the Sun to me.

We're peacekeepers. We patrol the galaxy, dealing with criminals, pirates, warlords, and natural disasters. Normally we're assigned a sector to be guardian over.

As for the sun... it is composed of a massive sphere of burning gas, held together by its own gravity. Its size is massive, the world we are one is merely a fraction of its size. This world is in fact is in orbit around the Sun, causing the world to circle it in an orbit, while the planet itself spins. If you think of this world like a ball, it is constantly spinning and we are one spot on its surface. Daytime occurs because we are facing the sun. Its from these movements we derive most of our measurements of time, as well as our seasons. The sun's heat and light is also what sustains life on this and any other similar world.

[That was a lot to take in, John. She's silent, trying to process that all through her databanks]

Curious.

[She doesn't completely understand, but she'll pretend. She hates seeming ignorant]

I wonder why my own Creator chose not to include within the world he made for us.

[He realizes that it likely is. But he has no doubt she'll work it all out in enough time.]

I would assume a sun is unnecessary for an non-organic world.
