I'm really thankful that the majority of places I work have a "scent-free" policy for employees, as I'm sensitive to poisons strong scents and perfumes. However, you can't regulate the public. When I'm exposed to strong scents, my face gets a rash, my skin and lips tingle, and sometimes I can taste the chemicals on my tongue. Also, repeated exposure gives me a headache, and my brain gets foggy, making it hard to think. It hurts.
Today, a customer came up to my register, and his cologne was so strong, that I felt sick after the two minute interaction. About five or ten minutes later, I went to the back of the store to put a book back on the shelf, and when I went into the aisle where the book belonged, my eyes started burning from someone's perfume that was lingering there. (I'm not sure if the perfume was from the guy, as I'm not sure if he went in that aisle.) It was awful. No one was there, or had been there for quite some time (over ten minutes), yet the perfume was so fucking strong that my eyes were burning. I had to go and wash my face and eyes out, and I did not go anywhere near that area of the store for the rest of the day.
And then a while later, while I was still headachey and foggy, yet another customer drenched in perfume came up to my register. I felt so fucking stuffy and sick from those three encounters. Thankfully I was due for my lunch break just after the third incident, so was able to get out of the store and clear my head. Although, before my break was over, I went to the washroom, and someone in there had been wearing strong perfume. Ugh.
