So far, I've seen four movies at the Vancouver International Film Festival: When the Bough Breaks last Sunday, We Were Children on Tuesday (my reviews of the films are here), and two more today: Our Children and If It's Not Now, Then When?. I saw Our Children alone, and If It's Not Now, Then When? with a friend.

I don't go out and see a lot of movies on a regular basis--I'm just not particularly interested in the big "Hollywood Blockbusters", but I do like the film festival (this is the first time I've seen a lot of movies) because it's the place to see movies that are a little different. I tend to see movies at the film festival that are somber or a bit twisted, and the two I saw tonight definitely fit in with that. Both had some pretty... interesting endings.

Our Children is about a woman whose mental state deteriorates over the years, caused by a loveless marriage, mental and emotional abuse from her husband and husband's surrogate father, and fatigue from having four children in a short period of time. The film ends with her losing her mind and killing her children.

If It's Not Now, Then When? is about loneliness and human dynamics. The three main characters are a dysfunctional family consisting of a mother and her two young adult children, a daughter and son. They all live in the same apartment, but never see each other, each one consumed in their loneliness. In the end, the two siblings pull a VC Andrews.
