Bagels

Bagels are a popular food item, and most people prefer their bagels toasted, some being more particular about this than others. So if toasted bagels are common, why is it so goddamn hard for the bagel place in my school's SUB to figure out how to toast a fucking bagel?! I hate untoasted bagels, and all I ask for is my bagel to be toasted, but idiots working there can't seem to figure out just how one goes about toasting a bagel. I'm no chef, but surely it's not that hard?

Because of this, as well as a few other isolated incidents, I was fed-up and decided to ban the bagel place. It was a tough decision since there are very few decent places to eat on campus, but I was sick of getting untoasted or barely toasted bagels, which occurred probably half the time (it's really hit or miss with them). However, during the summer, food choices are even more limited since many places are closed, and a bagel and cream cheese is the perfect thing for me to eat in the morning before class or work, as well as relatively cheap ($2.89, up from $2.80, thanks to the HST). So I made an exception to my banning rule which is, "Once I ban a place, it is banned forever!" and decided to unban the bagel place (but it was never official, since it was never on my list, and once it's on my list, I can not unban a place).

So for the past couple of months, I've been going there nearly every day, usually to get a bagel and cream cheese before class or work, or sometimes a bagel sandwich or bagel melt for lunch. For the most part it's been pretty reliable--the woman taking the orders is really friendly and knows that I must have a toasted bagel, so unlike some of the previous people who took the orders, she's always sure to indicate TOASTED on the order slip. However, she's not the one who actually prepares the bagels, so once in a while, despite her being careful to indicate that I want a toasted bagel, I get an untoasted or barely toasted bagel.

Several weeks ago I ordered a tuna melt, and of course requested that it be toasted. The way I'd prepare a toasted tuna melt is to toast the bagel, and then put the tuna and cheese on the toasted bagel, and toast it again to make it a bagel melt. But of course they didn't do that; instead, they put the tuna and cheese on an untoasted bagel, and then toasted that. The result: a disgusting soggy mess. Unfortunately I didn't check my bagel first, and left for class (I didn't have much time to get to my class and eat the tuna melt before class started). I ate the first half of the bagel even though it was gross because I would pass out if I didn't eat, but could not bring myself to eat the rest, so I had to throw it out. The next day I told the woman, simply as an FYI, that the bagel was untoasted and gross. I wasn't demanding to be compensated or anything, but just wanted to let her know.

Yesterday, the same thing happened. But instead of a tuna melt, I splurged and ordered lox and cream cheese on a toasted bagel, and once again, it wasn't toasted. Because it wasn't a melt it wasn't a soggy mess, but it was not appetizing at all, and I ended up throwing out most of it, wasting $6.50. So today I went to the bagel place and told the woman what happened, and asked her if I could get a free bagel with cream cheese as compensation. I didn't want to sound like a demanding, entitled bitch, but I can't afford to spend money on something and not be able to eat it because they fucked up (the tuna melt is about $6), so I don't think I was out of line. Thankfully the woman was cool with compensating me with a free bagel with cream cheese, otherwise I would have been really pissed off, and officially BAN the place once and for all!

bagels, banned!, rant (2), things i hate
