I think I've finally gotten my schooling figured out (the money part will come later...).
I started going to Douglas College in the fall of 2006 to get a few more credits (I have a bunch from Langara, but they didn't add up to anything), intending to transfer to UBC as soon as it was possible, and work on getting a Bachelor's of Science degree in Microbiology and Immunology. However, I wasn't sure when the best time to transfer to UBC would be.
I thought that perhaps transferring in the fall of 2007 would work, but my dilemma was that I would only be taking one course at Douglas College in the summer of 2007, and taking only one course a semester is a waste of money. (Not including tuition, it's costing me about $20,000 a year in living expenses to go to school, and it costs me the same amount of money regardless of how many courses I take in a semester, so I might as well get my money's worth and take two or three courses a semester instead of just one.)
The course I have to take in the summer is calculus I, and the only other course that I could possibly take in the summer is chemistry 1110. However, chemistry 1110 doesn't transfer to UBC on its own; I need to take chemistry 1110 and 1210 to get credit towards my degree. So taking chemistry 1110 and then transferring to UBC the following semester would be a waste, as I wouldn't be able to use the credit and would have to basically redo it at UBC, and I also don't want to take a semester off from chemistry, as I'd rather continue with my studies while it's fresh in my head.
So I thought that perhaps I could transfer to UBC in January 2008, which would give me a chance to finish my chemistry in the fall of 2007 at Douglas College, but it appears that you can not transfer at the beginning of the January semester. So I was undecided about what to do: try to get into UBC in the fall of 2007 and only take calculus during the summer, or wait until the fall of 2008 to transfer.
Even though I wasn't sure when I'd go to UBC, I applied anyway (and spent the $60 registration fee), as the deadline to apply was in January. I sort of procrastinated in making my decision, but the deadline to get all your transcripts is February 28, so I really needed to make a decision soon.
So this afternoon, partly because I was sick of studying, I spent time figuring out what to do. I checked to see which courses I needed to take for my degree, and which ones, if any, I could take at Douglas College and then transfer over. I've spent time before looking up courses and getting a general idea, but I hadn't really planned anything out. But this afternoon I needed to find out once and for all if it would be worthwhile for me to stay at Douglas College for one more year.
After carefully checking which courses are transferable for the degree I want, which prerequisites I need, and when the courses are offered at Douglas College, I've decided that I should stay at Douglas College for one more year, and go to UBC in the fall of 2008. If everything goes well, this is what my schedule will be for the next year:
Summer 2007:
Math 1210 (Calculus I)
Chem 1110
Fall 2007: (this won't be a fun semester!)
Chem 1210
Chem 2321 (Organic Chemistry Part I)
Biology 2321 (Cell Biology)
Jan 2008:
Math 1220 (Calculus II)
Chem 2421 (Organic Chemistry Part II)
Biology 2421 (Cell Biochemistry)
Summer 2008:
?
(retake calculus II if I fail)
Fall 2008:
Transfer to UBC
Notice that there aren't any physics courses? ;)
I'm glad that I was able to make it worthwhile to stay at Douglas College-the commute is awesome! At Douglas College, I can get most of my required second year courses done. There is only one microbiology course that I must take at UBC. It's such a relief to have a plan, and finally know when I will go to UBC. Too bad I wasted $60 though.
