While it was slow at work today, I was flipping through some children's books about animals. One book had a short blurb about the platypus, and said that it was one of three mammals that laid eggs, but didn't mention what the other two were, which I found very annoying, as I wanted to know. I wasn't positive, but thought that another monotreme is the echidna, and I just looked it up, and I was right.
However, I couldn't think of what the third was. I've just being looking on the internet, and all the websites only list the platypus and echidna.
This website lists two species of echidna, so I wonder if that is the third monotreme.
What a great word...monotreme.
Anyway, as I was flipping through another book, I wrote down the names of animals that I haven't heard of. (Watch out
photonduality, I'll be the master of Animal Alphabet!)
My favourite name is a bird called
"Cock-of-the-Rock". I couldn't help but giggle like a 5 year old when I saw the name.
Other names that I came across were:
quoll (now I finally have a Q!),
jerboa,
vampire squid (they
turn inside out for protection...creepy...),
gerenuk, and a whole bunch of animals that live in the mountains:
takin,
tahr,
markhur, and
bharal.
There were a couple of other animals that I have heard of, but would never recall during Animal Alphabet. They are the
gavial, and the
pangolin. I'll also have to remember
tapir.
