Daniel. Hint of Sam/Daniel.

Sam's eyes found his over the barrel of his pistol. Daniel held her gaze unwaveringly. His face was stone, but in the short time they'd known each other, she'd learned to read his eyes. To a certain extent.

The brigand holding her pressed the barrel of his crude pistol harder against her cheek, the metal digging into her skin, scratching her. Daniel tensed his jaw and forced his finger to relax on the trigger. The man held a primitive black powder pistol, packed with a charge of gun powder and a heavy lead ball. He tried not to think about the damage that lead ball would do to Sam's head. That beautiful mind.

Daniel quickly shifted his gaze to the soldier's cold eyes again. "Stop it."

The soldier sneered a bit. "Put that gun down, Dr. Jackson. You've been here two days, and I know you won't use it."

"Let her go."

"Put your weapon down or she dies." The fingers gripping Sam's throat curled inward. Sam winced just a bit.

Daniel held his pistol steady, the bead sitting right between the brigand's eyes. "Shoot her, and you will die." Never give up your gun. He remembered the advice well. Not in a hostage situation. Had it only been one week since he and Sam had sat together in the commissary discussing this very thing?

"My father told me, before I did my tour of duty in Iraq, that I needed to decide what I was going to do before I got there. Was I going to shoot or wasn't I? Which side was I on? Before I got off that airplane, I needed to know inside whether I would pull that trigger or not. There's no time to make that decision once people are shooting at you."

"It's not that simple, Sam."

"You need to decide, Daniel..."

Daniel gazed steadily at the soldier. "For the last time..."

The soldier gave him a pitying glance. "My cause is just. You can't fire." He brought the flintlock back on the pistol, dangerously. "You won't kill an innocent person."

Daniel stared at him. "You're not innocent anymore." He fired.

A dark smudge appeared on the soldier's forehead, and his head was encompassed by a dark mist. Sam ducked away from the man as the shot rang out, her hand coming up to shove the pistol away. The gun thumped to the ground beside her, followed closely by the soldier's body.

Daniel swallowed the breath in his throat as his heart hammered against his chest. Sam stared up at him from her knees, the side of her pale face speckled in a fine spray of the soldier's blood. He slowly lowered his pistol and met her gaze. "You okay?"

"Yeah." Her voice was rough and quiet. Her gaze was locked on his. "Daniel... are you okay?"

He took a deep breath and then nodded slowly. "I made my decision."

She nodded back and took his hand.
