The Hardest Mission of All

"Look, guys. I'm not going to lie to you. Our chances of survival are slim to none." Jack glanced grimly at the two men next to him. He had a palpable sense of dread inside of him that was playing havoc with his nerves.
Daniel seemed to be steeling himself. He stared straight ahead and nodded at Jack's warning. "Yeah," he agreed quietly. "But Sam's counting on us." He knew the stakes were high.
Teal'c remained silent but cast a worried glance in Jack's direction. This was an unknown enemy, and when he needed reassurance it was always O'Neill who could provide.
Jack knew this instinctively. He was the leader of SG-1 for better or worse. As much as he would have loved to pawn them off on someone else, these decisions were his to make. "Okay, let's go over this one final time, just to be sure. Repeat your assignments."
Teal'c went first. He looked out from a steely glare at the other two. "It is my job to walk point. I will do what is necessary to get us inside. Even if I must sacrifice innocents to do so."
Jack nodded once. "Good. Look scary, T. Maybe they'll part and let us through."
Teal'c gave a single nod in return.
"Daniel?" Jack glanced at the archeologist.
Daniel took a deep breath, calming his nerves. "I try to reason with them. If I can make a deal, I will, otherwise I'm to drop back and let you and Teal'c take over."
"Right." Jack checked the fastenings on his fingerless gloves. "Try to be as passive as possible. Maybe we can slide by without them even knowing."
Daniel met his gaze in silent understanding.
Jack tightened his jaw. "I'll keep an eye out for rogue agents and take the rear. The last thing we need is some wacko sneaking up on us or blind-siding us. Listen for my commands."
Teal'c and Daniel nodded, and Jack exhaled slowly. It was now or never. He glanced at his brothers-in-arms one final time. "This is for Carter, boys. Let's go." He started forward and let Teal'c take point, Daniel between them.
Someone shouted at them as they crossed the road. The building loomed tall before them.
"I still don't know why we couldn't just get Sam's birthday present online," Daniel grumbled as they approached the mall.
“Shut up and try to look charming, Daniel.”
