2. klint and i watched this ("OFF THE GRID- life on the mesa") last night. it was very good- very human and real in its treatment of the residents. and if you're... hmmm.... disenchanted with the way that anarchists handle things, you'll get an extra bonus. why do i keep getting more and more libertarian ( Read more... )

gonna netflix that documentary, thanks.

libertarianism is attractive to me in that it's an alternative from the two major parties. however, it seems like fervent adherents of every ideology love the their idea of what would happen if everyone bought in, but once the new ideology is adopted, it's adopted with many distortions and compromises and doesn't measure up. you know? i don't know, maybe i am just too grumpy. :-P

what's weird is that i have such a knee-jerk anti-nationalistic reaction whenever somebody talks about american patriotism, but when i think about what people mean when they say this country is the best in the world, in some ways, i agree. there's not really any place in the world where a group of people could do this and say eff you, guvment.

and libertarianism is certainly a wide enough range of ideas to keep me interested. but i always remind myself that conclusions are just where people get tired of thinking.

exactly, as much as theories about economic and social organizations are fun to play with, it's most impressive to me when an actual society is implemented that is measurably better. and ours is quite good as far as they go. it's only because we have high standards that we're found wanting in some ways.

my main concern now is that we have weaknesses in our economic, energy, transportation, and food systems. however, in that regard we are in the same boat with most other countries. perhaps more self-reliance and independent-minded localized problem-solving is just the thing right now!

that's definitely what we need. :)

and the reasons i hate america are basically that our consumption and luxury creates a whole of problems for the rest of the world that we are to arrogant to admit. that and our government is crooked as fuck. ;p

the entire europe union, canada, mexico, ecuador. these are all the ones I know.. there must be more. there is enough chinas to last us a life time but not every country other than US is a china.
plus "better of the worst" is not a healthy way of looking at these issues. don't let go off your criticism of nationalism and patriotism.

You can watch the whole thing, free and legal at http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/off_the_grid_life_on_the_mesa/ but you have to watch hilarious Wal-Mart ads.
