Yah, I'm in New York. I really like the lab I'm working in. Joyce, my mentor, is this 4'10" asian whose already gone through medical school, three years of residency, and is in the second or third year of her fellowship here. Yet, she seems like she's just a year or two older than me because of her temperment. Basically, I feel really comfortable around her and I don't feel like a stupid kid. And, she's letting me do a lot of really cool things. The past two days, I've separated lymphocytes from blood samples, washed them, and then plated them with interferon and different agonists in order to see if these would jump start these patient's B cells that are apparently not working correctly....that probably didn't make any since. Um, I'm taking immune cells that apparently aren't producing enough cells and add things that they may be missing to try to make them work.
I've also helped with an ELISA test and with an XTT test that helped quantify the proliferation rate of someone's B cells. Basically, I'm nerd-tastic and I'm really enjoying it. I'm going to get to shadow Joyce (I really need to call her Dr. Yu) tomorrow during her rounds at the allergy clinic and then I'll be in the lab some more.
I went to a yoga class yesterday with Bella. Definitely forty people inside of a very small room with no air circulation. It was still a very good class but afterwards, even with getting in the cold shower at the studio, neither Bella or I could get dry. So, I had to put on jeans and clothing while being sticky. Not cool. But, we found a really nice sushi place afterwards to eat, so it wasn't totally disgusting.
My room mate here is really funny. She's actually a lot like me...well, except she's asian and goes to Vassar. I think I'm the only student from a big college in the SURP program. The next largest college someone attends has maybe 20,000 people. Everyone else is from a really small college. All of the SURP kids are really nice and we all seem to be able to talk to each other pretty well. I think the fact that we're all super-nerds makes it easier to interact with each other.
I lurv New York but it makes me miss the laid-back-ness of Texas. And the courtesy. People are so much nicer in the South.
I gots to get me my stipend check. Lurv and affection.
