I got a job

This is the closest thing to a real job that I have ever had.

I got a FT lecturer position at the college in which I have been working as an adjunct for the last 2 years. I get benefits and everything. It is still a contract position, but rather than being contracted every quarter, this happens on a yearly basis. There is reasonable job security, as they see a need for non-tenure track faculty for the foreseeable future.

This was totally unexpected and is a mixed blessing. I had planned on teaching this fall, but have been looking for a "real" job to get me out of academia. I have a decent prospect working at a domestic violence shelter, but I cannot wait for the second interview to decide my immediate future so if I get called back I will have to decline. Sad, because I was really excited about that job. I loved the woman who interviewed me and the atmosphere of the place. They are doing so many cool things-- it isn't just a shelter, but an advocacy organization that engages in public education and is branching out into a wide range of social justice issues. So much potential there. But, also not a lot of job security-- the reason the position is open is because they laid off 2 people in Feb-- and I am sure not a lot of pay. I was willing to take the chance a month or two ago, but now the timing is all off. I have to commit to the teaching job now or lose it and the prospect of not living on poverty wages is more than appealing.
