I've been thinking about friendships and how they develop. Up until this September, I hadn't had new friends for a long time, and I've been trying to remember what the early days of my friendships with Sheena and Yanfei were like.
Yanfei and I were best friends in elementary school, but then her family moved to the States and we drifted apart. We reunited 4 years ago, and it's like having a new, really good friend-and the work to get that level is already done! We haven't seen each other in over 10 years, but when we first started talking again I just knew that I could confide in Yanfei. We aren't best friends because we have missed 10 years of each other's lives, but calling Yanfei a "good friend" doesn't do her justice.
What would I call Sheena? She was my best friend, but I haven't been able to use that moniker for a long time. It didn't happen through anything malicious on her part or mine; just a gradual drifing apart that still makes me sad. That said, when we still get together I know that I can tell her ANYTHING.
So, once again I am in the exciting and unfamiliar early stages of new friendships. I can't wait to see what the next few years bring.
