Death In June (with Patrick Leaguas) @ Slimelight

Had a fun night, thinking that I didn't know anyone there, I bumped into a few folks that I'd met before, including panzerpenguin who was manfully manning the stalls despite bad wrists. Also augeas was there wearing a red gown and carrying his own portable bar, and met kekhmet who had an indepth knowledge of both industrial bands and intelligent agents! Saw my buddy from work at a distance, but wondered where fluffymark was!

Naevus were really very enjoyable. Clearly inspired by NeoFolk favourites, but mixing in a grinding repetetiveness almost reminiscent of early swans. The lyrics were both audible and amusing. The bass was mixed pretty high, which for live is actually to my taste, but the other guitars were also audible. A kind of supressed energy made for a reasonable stage presence.

In the interval and afterwards they played tracks from the forthcoming rarities album by DiJ, which sounded very interesting! A lot of tracks where the original version has DMT vocals, this time with Douglas P vocals. Also some more abstract soundscapes more like the noise sections on Take Care and Control or All Pigs Must Die.

The gig went pretty smoothly for DiJ standards, with only one error caused by Pat O'Kill forgetting the words after 20 years! In general he seemed nervous and not really into it (most of his time with his hands in his pockets), but on some songs pulled off some excellent performances which really did the original songs justice. But after a few songs they started using backing tracks for the electronic tracks, with douglas P going for it with hand held percussion, and it sounded excellent!

I really hope they do the same thing more often, mixing in more samples, keyboards, and other instruments as it really enrichened the sound. Of course it would also be good to have more reunions with ex members such as DMT and Rose, or even Albin Julius, but that may be a little too much to ask.

gigs, neofolk
