Alice and Rosalie left just after sunset.

The warehouse was completely dark inside.

The only light was that offered by the moon, shining in through the windows.

Jasper was barely struggling with the chains now. He just stood, eyes black and glazed, staring into the shadows.

Every now and then Edward heard him whimper, causing the mind reader to feel undeniable guilt.

He had spent so long being angry with Jasper, and now he wondered, if he had tried to help sooner, would it have made a difference?

"Jasper..." Edward moved to his brother's side. "I'm sorry. It shouldn't have been allowed to get this bad."

The empath gave no sign that he was listening, or had even heard.

Edward stepped closer, inches from his brothers bound body. "Can you hear me? I won't let this break you. I know you're still in there..."

The night was passing with an unnatural slowness.

The females hadn’t returned, and the silence inside the warehouse seemed to fill even the darkest corner.

Emmett closed his eyes, focusing on the sound of his own breathing. His fingers played with the links of chain in his hand. “Do you have your cell, Edward?”

“Yes. Why?”

“I think you should call Carlisle, found out if he’s okay.”

Edward nodded, reaching into the front pocket of his jeans. “You’re right.” He mumbled. “Should’ve done it sooner.”

He flipped open the cellular phone, finding and calling the doctor’s number. It rang three times.

“Edward, where are you? Is Jasper… alright?”

“No, Carlisle, he’s far from it. It doesn’t matter where we are, we’re safe. Don’t come looking for us.”

“Are the others with you?”

“Yes, Emmett is here now. Alice and Rosalie have gone…” Edward trailed off, knowing there was no way he could tell Carlisle what the girls were really doing.

“Have gone where, Edward? What’s going on?”

“Nothing. They haven’t gone anywhere. They’re outside, standing guard.”

“Why do they need to stand guard? Are you in danger?”

“No, listen, we’re in an old warehouse, its completely abandoned. And the nearest town is about twenty minutes away.”

“Then why are Alice and Rosalie outside standing guard?”

Edward groaned impatiently. “Carlisle, listen, the girls are just being cautious, watching out for wandering humans. You know how Jasper would react if he so much as smelt one. Look, I called to see how you were doing. Are you okay?”

“No.”

“Did he hurt you?”

“Not physically.”

Edward’s hand tightened around the phone. He sighed loudly, glancing at Jasper. “How did this happen, Carlisle? I mean, he just… snapped. Broke. I thought he was alright… or at least, in control. I had no idea he was so… starved. Its frightening.”

Carlisle was quiet for some time. “I think… I know… that this was my doing. I gave him hope, Edward. I promised to give him what he needed. Jasper believes that I can make him forget the taste of human blood, that I can save him… from himself. And maybe… maybe he’s right. But I was the one who put that idea in his head to begin with. I gave him hope, and then I took it all away. He snapped because of me.”

“You can’t blame yourself for this.”

“Of course I can.”

“Carlisle, don’t be ridiculous! You did everything in your power to help him. You let him drink from you, for goodness sake! I won’t listen while you try to convince yourself that you created a monster.”

“You’re wrong. I didn’t do everything…”

“You did what you could. And it is not your fault that it wasn’t enough.”

It was the doctor’s turn to sigh, and Edward could hear the exhaustion in the sound. “Could I talk to Emmett, please?”

“Sure.” Edward passed the phone to his brother.

“Carlisle?”

“How are you, Emmett?”

“I’ve been better.”

“I don’t doubt that. Is everyone alright? Rosalie and Alice?”

Emmett stalled, looking toward Edward. “They’re fine.”

“I need you to tell me something, honestly.”

“Uhm… What is it?”

“Do you think Jasper is in pain?”

“To an extent, yes.”

Emmett listened as Carlisle’s breathing hitched. “I want you to bring him home.”

“I don’t think that would be a good idea, Carlisle.”

Silence.

“Look, you don’t want to see him this way, alright? Just let us fix this, let us help him for once. You shouldn’t always have to shoulder the burden of those around you.”

“What are you going to do then? How are you going to fix him?”

“Uhm, well…”

“Emmett, what is going on? I know something’s wrong. Talk to me! Tell me.”

“I can’t! I mean -  Just, stop worrying, Carlisle.”

“Emmett, please. This is not a game. Too many people could get hurt if something goes wrong!”

“Nothing will go wrong. Edward and I are watching Jasper. He’s chained up, he can’t even move. We’ve got it under control.”

“And what is your plan, Emmett? Now that you have your brother chained up in an abandoned building, what are you going to do?”

“Fucking hell! Look, Alice and Rose have gone to hunt for a human. When they get back, Jasper can feed and maybe then all of this will stop.”

“What?! Emmett, there is no way I will let you do that! You can’t just let him kill. Please don’t do this. Bring him home. Just let me see what I can do.”

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Edward shouted, snatching the phone from Emmett’s hand. “Why would you tell him… Fuck!” Edward put the phone back up to his ear. “Carlisle, listen to me, I think we need to do this. You have to find some way to make yourself understand. Jasper is starving. It is driving him insane, and if we don’t do something now, he will kill.”

“Edward… do not let this happen. Please… don’t. Bring him to me. I will give him what he wants, he can have me. Just please, bring him home, and I will do anything I can to stop his suffering.”

“I can’t do that, Carlisle. I won’t let him hurt you. I’m sorry.” Edward switched off the cell, slipping it back into his pocket.
