Alright, for those of you who don't know, I'm twenty-four. And with that in mind, here's what I'd like to say:
What has happened to Halloween? Back in my day, kids put effort into costumes, and yes, they all wore them. Kids wore costumes to school, or at least silly headbands or hats. And I was at catholic school for crying outloud. Kids did not leave the house at 5p and be back in doors by 5:30, 6 at the latest. Kids left the house, all together, parents with the younger ones in tow, maybe they went home, with those younger sibs after the first street, or shortly after, but the rest of the kids continued on. We didn't really care that much about who was giving out what (but sure, there were always the "good" houses) we got a kick out of the way people decorated their houses. We commented on the candy hander-outters costume just like they commented on ours. Trick or Treat and thank you were a given, not a shocker when you heard them.
Families trusted kids enough to leave a basket of candy on the stoop if they were all out trick-or-treating together or at a party together or something. Also, the older kids that went trick-or-treating to get back to their childhood or just for kicks or who knows why...were kind enough to go out a bit later than everyone else, they let the younger kids get their candy first, whether it be earlier in the evening or just walking up to the stoop/door sooner. They went out with costumes on as well, good ones. And if not good at least decent with some thought, even if thrown together hastily. They did not push in front of the little kids, or come to the door without costumes.
I realize Halloween isn't a "real" holiday in the respect that Thanksgiving and Christmas are, but c'mon, why isn't there any effort?
This is sad to me. Especially since, I pretty much hate Christmas and can't stand thanksgiving in almost every regard, Halloween, I actually enjoy. However, the saddness that has become this Holiday usually causes me to head up to my cabin, make pies and carmel apples then walk to dogs through a town near by that is totally pet friendly, watching the little kids parade around town, where not only do you trick or treat at houses, but at all the stores, some even stay open late to welcome the kids.
This year, for various reasons, I couldn't make it up there, and was instead reminded of just how pathetic things have become.
I can't help it. This makes me sad.
