Title: First Impressions

Prompt: Firsts
Word Count: 1,590

Summary: First impressions of Sam and Jack
Author's Notes: While I wanted to show how the relationship starts with Sam and Jack, I really wanted to try integrating the show’s script into the story. Hence the speaking lines from ‘where is he transferring from’ to ‘Understood,’ are taken directly from the transcripts. I filled in the blanks to make it more readable.
Prequil to this:
here The plane trip from Langley to Cheyenne took longer than Sam expected. However, she was happy she had learned over the years to send her stuff ahead. Transferring from the Airplane to her car becomes nothing more than a brisk walk. No waiting for you luggage to unload, spin around the belt, for that matter you don’t have to worry about lost luggage either. It’s those little things that Sam learned over the years that reassured her that this moment was hers. Sam’s cockiness was exactly what was needed to get through her interview. She knew she had been selected to be on the new team, the problem now was proving she had what it takes. This is testosterone territory, which at times can be harder to navigate than a category 5 white water trip.
Sam navigates through the halls knowing exactly where she is going. Being here brings back memories. After all she did help set up the program with Katherine. Sam basically wrote most of the systems that are set in place. She could hear the group as she rounded the corner into the briefing room. “Where is he transferring from?”
“She is transferring from the Pentagon.” Sam walks through the door and maneuvers to her seat at the end of the table. “I take it you’re Colonel O’Neill.” Sam stands and salutes Colonel O’Neill, “Captain Samantha Carter reporting Sir.” Jack, without hesitation, salutes back.
“But of course you go by Sam.” One of the Major’s smiles indignantly.
“You don’t have to worry Major, I played with dolls when I was a kid.” She shoots right back, her gusto at full attention. She was not going to back down from these boys.
“G.I. Joe?” The same Major asked. Samantha read his tag, as she thought, it was Major Kawalski.
“No, Major Matt Mason.” Sam smiled smugly.
“Oh…” Kawalski turned to the major next to him, Ferretti and asked, “Who?”
“Major Matt Mason, astronaut doll. Did you have that cool little backpack that made him fly?” Ferretti motioned with his hands as if he was actually playing with the doll.
“Let’s get started, Colonel?” General Hammond stated in the only way a General can, with authority.
“Thank you.” Samantha sits back down at her sit. “Those of you on your first trip through the gate, you should be prepared for what to expect.”
Sam chimes in on cue as Jack pauses for a breath, “I’ve practically memorized your report from the first mission, I’d like to think I’ve been preparing for this my whole life.”
“I think what the is Colonel is saying is, have you ever pulled out of a simulated bombing run in an F-16 at 8-plus G’s?” Kawalski asks suspecting a no when in fact he gets:
“Yes.” Sam smiles showing all of her teeth like a mom protecting her kids, only her kids are her gender.
“Well…” Kawalski stumbles to find an appropriate comeback, “it’s way worse than that.”
Ferretti jumps in trying to save his buddies pride, “By the time you get to the other side you’re frozen stiff, like you’ve just been through a blizzard,” he pauses for dramatic reasons, “naked.” Ferretti then looks at Kawalski grinning. Kawalski grins back.
“That’s a result of the compression your molecules undergo during the millisecond required for reconstitution.” Sam explains the fear away with rationality.
“Oh here we go, another scientist, General please.” Jack holds out his hand pointing at Sam in hopes that the General will take her off his team.
“Theoretical astrophysicist.” She points out.
“Which means?” Jack cocks an eyebrow expecting some long drawn out mission statement on life.
“Which means she is smarter than you are Colonel. Especially in matters related to the Stargate.” Hammond wisely intervenes as Samantha’s mouth opens to explain in detail her smartness. Kawalski and Ferretti snigger only to be silenced abruptly by Jack’s quick turn of his head.
“Colonel I was studying the gate technology for two years before Daniel Jackson made it work and before you both went through. I should have gone through then. But Sir, you and your men might as well accept the fact that I am going through this time.” Samantha explains in a so matter of fact way that it even catches Jack a bit off guard.
“Well with all due respect Doctor I…” Jack starts to say.
“It is appropriate to refer to a person by their rank, not their salutation. You should call me Captain, not Doctor.” Sam corrects Jack.
“Captain Carter’s assignment to this unit is not an option, it’s an order.” Hammond finds it necessary to clear up this miscommunication.
“I’m an Air Force officer just like you are Colonel, and just because my reproductive organs are on the inside instead of the outside, doesn’t mean I can’t handle whatever you can handle.” Sam says while leaning forward. She’s not backing down from this fight. Jack maybe the alpha male but Samantha is the alpha female.
Jack steps back a moment, smiles gently and explains, “Oh this has nothing to do with you being a woman. I like women. I just have a little problem with scientists.”
“Colonel I logged over a hundred hours in enemy airspace during the Gulf War, is that tough enough for you? Or are we going to have to arm wrestle?” Sam can feel herself go overboard with that statement. Even though every inch of her body and body movements say I’m tough, she knows that the line she just ran over may have been too much. Apparently Jack didn’t think so, it shuts him up. Only his eyebrows rise to show his interest.
“I hate to throw a damper on your enthusiasm, but I still say the safest most logical way to deal with this is to bury the Stargate, just like the ancient Egyptians did, make it impossible for the aliens to return. It’s the only way to eliminate the threat.” The young man at the opposite end of the table speaks out through the tension between Carter and O’Neill.
“Except it won’t work.” Jack starts to feel like he’s preaching to the choir only the choir is singing back.
“It worked before.” Hammond tries to bring Jack back from annoyance.
“They know what we are now, they know ho far we’ve come, we’re a threat to them. They’ve got ships General, Ra had one as big as the great pyramid, they don’t need the Stargate to get here they can do it the old fashioned way. Now with all due respect to Mr Glass-is-half-empty over there,” Jack points to Sammuals, “don’t you think maybe we should use the Stargate to do a little reconnaissance before they decide to come back…again?” Jack would never in a million years think he would plead get back into the Air Force, and this is the closest he comes.
“I’ll give you exactly twenty-four hours to either return or send a message through, no Kleenex boxes please. Otherwise we’ll assume the worst and send a bomb through.” Hammond says, getting up signaling that, that was it.
“Understood.” Jack acknowledges his orders.
Walking away from the table Sam thinks that maybe this time she crossed the line. Her cockiness may have shown the wrong first impression. Down the steps she goes, well into the hallway she takes a deep breath. A hand pushes into her stomach as she tries to calm her nerves. Sam straitens up as she hears footsteps jogging behind her. One last breath out and she hears. “Captain Carter” It’s Jacks voice. She braces for the immanent backlash. She slows her canter down while he catches up. “I want you to know I don’t have anything against you, as a…well as a woman.”
“You made that perfectly clear Colonel,” Samantha’s tone has changed from inside the testosterone filled briefing room. She feels a little more at ease when it is just the Colonel and she.
“There is just something about scientist, I can’t stand.”
“So your saying you can’t stand me? You don’t even know me!” Samantha temper starts to rise once more, how could he say something like that.
“How am I supposed to support you as our CO if your can’t stand me.” She blurts out.
“You didn’t let me finish.” He interrupts Sam’s rant, “But,” he raises a finger in the air to protest, “If Hammond trust you, so do I not to mention even Daniel earned my trust.” Jack turns and takes his leave making sure that she does not have the last word. Sam’s face is completely perplexed. ‘What just happened,’ she thinks. ‘Did he just say I was okay?’
