I am going to go to the Food Bank to volunteer on Sunday and the Astrodome on Monday. Please let me know if you are volunteering and at what time. I think we should all meet and go together. There are reports of apparently some volunteers being attacked and so on. I'm not afraid of the reports, but I think it's smarter to get there and walk in as a team or as a group. Just please be careful when you go to volunteer if you choose not to use the buddy system. I am not making excuses for people's aggressiveness and by no means trying to joke here, but these people have lost everything and survival mode is going to kick in with them. I am only taking my photo id and nothing else with me.
One of my friends also came up with a really good idea that she wants to put together. She is looking for volunteers that can volunteer either Thursday or Sunday. She is thinking about getting a group of adults and possibly a staff member from the astrodome to take the children to the park. This would allow the parents a few hours to basically get some space and try to work on things they may need to address but can't because they are also trying to take care of their kids. I am getting her the number for the astrodome to talk to them about the idea. Please let me know if you are available a Thursday or Sunday and email me your contact information at nieflah@comcast.net.
It's kind of sobering when you are driving home and the boards that normally flash road closures or amber alerts are instead showing "San Antonio Emergency Shelter 800 xxx xxxx". And you start to think that hundreds of people have no where to go and nothing to there names and are looking for shelter. In addition, they are looking for anyone that can provide shelter. If you know of even a garage that can be made into temporary rooms or "housing" (as suggested on the news) contact the astrodome. Anything is something and better than nothing.
