introduction; The first time Glen comes over to the Vessalius manor, half of the servants faint, along with his mother. His father scolds him, later; why didn't he warn any of them that Glen Baskerville was coming?

Jack doesn't have an answer to that. Was he not allowed to invite his best friend into his own home?

Glen's the one to chide him, later, in the privacy of the former's bedroom balcony. "You need to learn the game of Houses, Jack," he scolds, fondly, and Jack just ducks his head.

verse; There's a piano in the house; a grandiose masterpiece made of ivory and black-lacquered wood. Jack has worn it down single-handedly, and he repairs and tunes it himself, before calling the boys over and seating them.

Gilbert looks vaguely horrified at the prospect. Vincent tugs his brother to his side and tentatively presses down C-major. Moments later, Gil follows, and Jack doesn't have the heart to wince when the two of them bang out a magnificent atrocity of music.

He teaches them Chopsticks at first, for the sheer fun of three people playing at the same time, on different scales.

pre-chorus;

Glen wants to see his music room.

Jack reasons that he hasn't cleaned it in ages, but Gilbert pipes up
and innocently squeaks a 'but you didn't sleep last night because
you were scrubbing the floor because you wouldn't let the maids in...'.

Glen gives him a Look.
Jack debates running for home and locking that door shut.
His best friend merely remarks 'I do hope you don't faint,'
and sweeps past him to the stables.

I'm doomed, he says, sadly, and the boys cling to his trouser leg.

chorus; Glen, through weeks of Jack's careful coaxing, arrives with Alice in tow. He suspects the girl is clinging to the duke because of sheer nervousness, not because of the comfort that Glen can provide.

She runs into Jack's arms at the first chance she gets. Behind him, Vincent sunnily stabs a stuffed rabbit; Jack is sure that his brother despairs all over again.

"Well," says Glen, already seated at the piano, fingers familiar over the keys. "Let's start, shall we?"

Jack's already pulled up the customary second stool, with the boys already on it, enjoying the ride. Vincent sits next to Gilbert, who tries very hard not to lean against Glen too much. Alice is on Glen's other side, and she plays the lower octaves like she has perfect pitch.

Jack just stands behind them, arms folded, not needing to see the music sheet to know that when the four of them play, it's

perfect.
His heart sings with the melody, and he never wants it to end.

bridge;

"Mister Glen! Vincent and me - "

"Vincent and I, Gilbert."

"...Vincent and I wanted to give you something."

"..."

"Master Jack said it's your birthday."

"...I said no such thing!"

"You said it on paper, Master Jack."

"..."

"..."

"Happy birthday!"

"...I think Alice...has something too?"

"It's - "

"It's all right, Alice. You do not have to say anything."

"H-happy birthday..."

"...why are you staring at me like that?"

"..."

"Stop that."

"...Jack."

"I said stop staring! It's not like I haven't gotten you something. Here!"

"..."

"For goodness' sake!"

"...you gave me a sword. And a scabbard. Have you memorised the Baskerville coat-of-arms?"

"Not... really."

"..."

"Master Jack, why are you turning red...? Are you ill?"

collision;

The Hero of Sablier's finest hour.

The worst hour of Jack Vessalius' life.

instrumental solo;

The room is quiet when he sits down, alone, at his piano.

Jack remembers, and sobs silently into his bandaged hands.

coda;

It's okay.

It's definitely going to be okay.

I'll meet you there; just wait.
