They can exchange barbed witticisms in the courtroom and laugh about it over oysters in the taproom afterward! Only Garrow takes everything so seriously and, rather than treating the law as a gentlemanly sporting occasion, gets all upset when people get sent to the gallows. Silvester, empathy-challenged but also a total snob who never quite sees poor people as really people, finds this inexplicable.

Because he finds Silvester so annoying that he can't imagine Silvester is acting out of anything but malice, even though in Silvester's eyes being a snarky annoying opponent is clearly an overture of...maybe not exactly friendship, given that Garrow is an upstart with no Oxford training...but, like, it shows Silvester's esteem! How could Garrow misinterpret his friendly joshing and challenge Silvester to a duel! UGH WHAT A NINCOMPOOP, clearly the only remedy is shooting him a little bit.
