Yes, it's another entry about Vikings. SORRY.
I need to work through my feelings about episode two. I am still enjoying it, I think! Lagertha is amazing, Rollo is a horrible person but remains a horrible person with the most handsome face on the entire show so at least he improves the view, and Ragnar is genuinely endearing. I had a brief moment of, "that man's name isn't Knut, it's Knútr!" but then I reflected that that is stupid, and that final -r is bloody difficult to pronounce for English speakers and would mean that all the Eriks needs to be Eiríkr and WHERE WOULD IT END? Lagertha should probably be Hlaðgerðr! THE MADNESS WILL NEVER STOP. So, Vikings, you will be pleased to know that you have my permission to slightly muck up Old Norse names.
ANYWAY, my point is that I broadly enjoyed the episode. Ships! Talking about gods! The Earl being a magnificent dick! But then in the last fifteen minutes I started being very very sadface, in quite a strong way. Lindisfarne. ;__; I think my issue is that I am a little overinvested in the early mediaeval period (SURPRISE), and I have mostly studied Insular sources, so obviously I am very used to thinking of that first raid on Lindisfarne as the BEGINNING OF THE TERROR and it just makes me a bit sad. Lots of people going to be very very miserable from those Viking bastards over the next few centuries, and I can't quite make my head flip the 'THIS HAPPENED YEARS AGO' switch. :(:(:(:(:(
ON THE OTHER HAND: the Athelstan/Ragnar vibes are already insanely delicious. I already foresee a problem, because I also hardcore ship Ragnar/Lagertha (omg the fighting) and I am generally not a successful OT3er. Life is hard.
