Time for an epic tab-closing post, right? I think so. Thank you to everyone I got these links from, I'm sorry I haven't individually credited.

Fic to read:
Chrysalis by
starcrossedgirl - Harry Potter, Snape/Harry, 84, 629 words.

this tornado loves you by
liketheroad - Suits AU, Mike/Harvey, 59, 792 words.
A couple of H50 hooker!fic recs (Can I just register my distaste for this trope being called 'hooker!fic'? Don't like the casual use of that descriptor. But also can't brain enough right now to remember the job descriptor generally preferred by people working in the sex industry - is there one which is generally agreed on? And fuck, I love the trope.)
Summer 2010 by cimmerians - Glee, Kurt/Finn, long.

sansets's longfic recs

Some interesting things:
- On the prevalence of US tropes in storytelling.
I have been holding off on posting this link because it deserves my full attention, but now it's reached the point where the post I wanted to make has gone stale in my mind. What I wanted to say about this was, oh, everything. How when I went to the US I was blindsided by the cultural gap, and realised that despite the constant presence of US media + politics etc. in the UK, I was not from the same milieu as Americans. I am far, far more European than I ever thought I was (it is unusual for British people to consciously identify themselves as European, in my experience, but that trip made me realise that we really kind of are). How I wrote this long original fic (and i'm trying my hardest not to fall) with main characters who are unexotic in every possible way, to me, set in a place which is similarly completely unexotic, and received a lot of comments on how markedly British the fic was. Which was utterly unintended and slightly surprising, though it probably shouldn't have been. How we speak the same language and we consume a lot of the same media, but we really aren't the same, and yet we are constantly expected to swallow American cultural assumptions as though they are our own in television shows and films, and indeed successfully do so, almost always without noticing.
- What's the language of the future?.
Spoiler: it's English, but not necessarily an English controlled by native English speakers.
- Exercises in the Yokohama Dialect.
Sort of fascinating, and weird.
- Leyendecker and the Arrow Collar Man.
Some gorgeous and also slightly hilarious vintage drawings.
- Potatoes in yoghurt.
Dear self, make these.
- Men are Mysterious Widdle Butterflies.
Faaascinating food for thought on the male and female orgasm.
- WWII: Women in the Fight.
Really, really awesome photos.
- Led by the child who simply knew.
You've probably read this one already as well - a gorgeous news story about a transgender child and her parents and brother.
- Neighborhood Hazard (or: Why the Cops Won’t Patrol Brice Street).
So. Fucking. Funny.
- Cooking For People Who Don't Carnival: Food Security Round.
I am intending to make a post for this, about the time I Skyped my dad for advice on whether it was acceptable to eat green-tinged chicken about a week past its sell-by date and was told that yes, yes it was. Uh, that's basically the post. :D My family thinks mould adds flavour to food! (When I actually make the post, I'm going to be a little more cautious about this, obviously, but I think my main point is that food is easier and more resilient than nervous cooks sometimes give it credit for, and for meat, what makes it safe is the cooking process, not storing it 100% correctly etc.)

Some fannish links:
- If you're a member of the generation_kill community over on LJ, then you will be able to see these scorching hot and intriguing cosplay photos of a female Fick and a female Colbert. Really well done.
- (Sit Tight) I'm Gonna Need You To Keep Time [Spencer Plays The Drums Primer].
- A survival guide to prison by a guy who was recently released.
If you ever want to write a fic set in a UK prison, I think you'll find this pretty fascinating, although probably not the be- and end-all of your research. This is not really a primarily fannish link, for me, but it turns out that the main thing I wanted to say about it was the aforesaid fannish thing.
- some thoughts on manpain. um. many thoughts on manpain, actually.
If you're someone who might be interested in reading this, you've probably already read it, it's not a new post. But just in case you haven't, here is some very cogent food for thought on the way [a woman's] death is explained to the audience via the camera saying "some men are sad".

AND FINALLY, I had a ridiculous amount of fun yesterday with the tell me about a story I haven't written meme, and invite further requests if you've got a minute or two, because it's fuuuuun. Fandoms: Avengers movieverse, Merlin, Generation Kill, bandom, Sherlock, Psych, Pratchett, Star Trek movieverse, Psmith, Dan'n'Lewis if you want, any kind of ridiculous origific idea (PARTICULARLY if it has an early mediaeval setting). Taking UK rap off the list because
pulchritude called my bluff and actually suggested it. [ETA: ALSO SUITS I CAN DO SUITS I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT SUITS. Thank you for reminding me, sying!]

scribbling: meme, a fan for the ages: everything else, a fan for the ages: generation kill, will not be televised, shiny things, life's too short to read all of the fic
