Two months ago, my digital camera broke when it fell out of my cold, distraught hands and hit the parking lot pavement at an unfortunate angle. On Sunday, my 35mm film camera -- my love of seven years, my travel companion, my third hand -- slid off my seated lap and hit the floor at a particularly unfortunate angle, breaking the lens. Earlier that day I had run out of film, and later that day I finished off my photo album. At the moment, I am a former photographer.
Well, the price of fixing both cameras, getting more film, and finding a new album is somewhere above $300; the price of a brand spanking new digital SLR, the Canon Digital Rebel XT, is $600. I decided to front-load my investment and purchased a Rebel yesterday night. It will arrive tomorrow, and I can't fucking wait.
Too bad I don't have money for such unexpected expenses. I'm going to sell off my old camera's body and telephoto lens, which isn't at all useful for day-to-day shooting, and I'll be saving lots of money on film and developing costs, and I even picked up a family portraits job for the day after Christmas. Maybe I'll be able to convince my parents to chip in as my birthday present or something, but with Christmas just around the corner, I don't think so. Maybe my landlady will accept rent payments in portraiture? Jesus god, I sure hope this was a good decision.
