Indeed. Have you ever seen the 2005 remake of Pride and Prejudice? It pertains to a discrepansy between that and the book.

Only a little discrepancy? Did it also strike you that the film version of Mary was a little too self-aware?

My favourite off-kilter adaptation of an Austen book is Patricia Rozema's reworked version of Mansfield Park. I don't object to directors tweaking Austen's satire for contemporary sensibilities, just as long as they understand what it is being satirized.
