When a dog is not just a dog.

A dog is not just a dog when you initially thought you weren't attached but found that the news of his passing ruined your good disposition throughout the day.

A dog is not just a dog when you actually miss the territorial stink he leaves on the side of your house. A dog is not just a dog when huge pools of drool start becoming okay because of him. A dog is not just a dog when you miss the irony of him being the bigger but tamer one in the family. A dog is not just a dog when you remember the happiness in his long, wagging tail and big, oogly eyes whenever you come home from the north. A dog is not just a dog when you actually miss pushing him away for the nth time (and now wish you didn't), because he just won't stop cuddling you or laying his head on your lap. You just sigh and leave him there, like a baby, because another look at that pout is sure to make you melt. It's sad to see that baby go.

A dog is not just a dog when you find your not-so-affectionate father actually sobbing as you bury the poor canine. A dog is not just a dog when you actually believe that the dog got sick and was sent to the hospital in exchange for your brother leaving a motorcycle accident unscathed that same morning. Believing so may make his death a bit more acceptable, but superstition aside, that still doesn't change what he was, or could have been, to me in my eyes: a hero.

His life was short, but I hope he had a good one.

We'll miss you, Borgy boy. I hope you're happy in dog heaven. :(

musings, sniff
