I think about you all the time, and I don't need the same.
- Name, Goo Goo Dolls (written by John Rzeznik, 1995)
This used to be one of my favorite song lines, but after everything I've learned in life, it now remains some good line in some good song. The heart in singing that line isn't the same to me anymore.
Call me selfish, but I've had enough of the concept of martyrdom. That kind of thinking is better left for the cheesy love songs to be belted out for fun. Do you really think that loving someone without them loving you back is a good feeling? Maybe for the high days, yes. It can be a good kind of hurt. But can someone really feel that way for the rest of his or her life? In the end you die lonely. So what's the point?
Maybe it's because I've experienced having loved someone and being loved in return. Honestly, there's no better feeling. Why spend the rest of your life loving someone who doesn't love you back when there's the possibility of the kind of bliss reciprocated love can give? We'll all probably go through a stage in our life where love is unrequited, but there will come a point where we just have to move the fuck on.
Someone else told me something that makes a lot more sense. He is one of the classic examples of unrequited love in my life.He didn't love me the same way, but he cared enough to want me to find that person who'll let me take the same kind of love I'm willing to give. Life's a bit ironic that way:
You should know your worth.
- Olympia, 2008
He or she may not ever love you the same way, but this beloved person could at least give you the liberty of wishing you the best in finding someone who will. So take it.
The problem now is, where the hell is this so-called person who knows our worth? That's a whole other story, but for now I guess it's best not to settle and stop feeling so shitty about oneself. Just leave martyrdom to the saints.
