Bundesliga Update
As all leagues enter the final stretch, some leagues are getting extremely interesting, while some are already done and dusted.
Bundesliga has been by far the closest league this year, and I dont remember a title chase being so close for a long time. Every team seems to be beating every other team !
At the top, Schalke suffered a 2-1 loss to VfL Bochum, their derby rivals, who themselves have moved from 16th to 10th in the last couple of months. Schalke are still top, with 62 points from 31 matches, closely followed by VfB Stuttgart who are on 61 from 31 matches. Bremen are on 60 points, but they have a game in hand. Bayern Munich are 4th at 53 points, and look all set to miss Champions League football next season.
Schalke have been leading since February, but they seem to be choking at the end. They have come close twice in the last five years, and like South Africa in cricket, seem to be losing at the critical junctures. They last won the title back in 1958.
And its no less tense at the bottom. Monchengladbach look set to be relegated, but there is big battle brewing above them. Just 8 points separate 16th placed Alemannia Aachen (33) to 7th placed Hertha Berlin (41).
Will Schalke hold their nerve ? Will Stuttgart continue their impressive run ? Or will it be Werder Bremen right at the death ? My favourite : Werder Bremen, because they play like champions!
