Thanks to
dieastra and
ziparumpazoo, I accepted my GateFic nomination in time to be included in the voting this year (gmail was nomming the notifications and also, it never occurred to me to look at the nomination list for my name). I am very honored to have been nominated (and how awesome is it that I'm in the "Team badfic/crackfic" category, w00t!). It was a total surprise - so thanks to whomever put my name in/recognized
As Seen On... Orilla!
Now I just have to find some time to
read everything and vote!

Garden report: we've had a couple of 80°+ days, so I've been watering like mad. Yesterday, when moving the sprinkler, I saw some furry creature moving through one of the raised beds. At first I thought it was a rat (ick), but I looked closer and saw the most pathetic thing ever: a paraplegic squirrel. Its back legs were not working, so it was dragging itself by its front legs. I don't know if he fell and broke his back or what, but aw, so sad! I doubt it will make it long, considering the number of cats who hunt in my yard. :(
Still picking tons of strawberries, and now lettuce and peas and cilantro. Also, the raspberries are ripening, and the blueberries are starting to get a touch of color. The beans, cucumber, and tomato plants are finally starting to really grow, yay!

NPR is doing a really cool article/podcast series this week called "Who Serves". Less than 1% of Americans are now serving in the US military. The series takes a look at those who have made the decision to fight in America's wars. Today's story - a high school teacher who gave up his job to become a Navy corpsman, now serving in Afghanistan. Check it out here:
The Impact of War: Who Serves I know I've pimped them before, but it can't hurt to mention them again: for just 2 bucks, you can brighten a warrior's day. Through Green Beans Coffee's
Cup of Joe for a Joe program, you can gift a warrior with a coffee card and a note of thanks/support. And you will probably get a note of thanks in return! On their
FB page they post pics and stories of Joes and Janes with their coffee drink (and it's kind of hilarious to see pictures of these big bad dudes and dudettes with frilly iced coffee drinks in hand (it's HOT in The Sandbox this time of year, yo)).

The Space Between by Callie. A mature, H/C, Sam/Jack tag for "Death Knell". She does a wonderful job of exploring the verbal, non-verbal, and physical communication between Sam and Jack. Really lovely H/C and a very believable tag for this episode.
