I'm working. Really.

OK, I'm procrastinating! Yay!

I watched some Whale Wars this weekend... it's interesting. The crew is this weird mix of a few actual experienced sailors and then a bunch of granola-y activists who just want to stop whale hunting, omg! but don't really know anything about working on a ship. Hijinks ensue, like let's take this zodiac out in arctic ( Read more... )

ZOMGosh! Yes! Watched all the WW episodes this weekend (except for the finale that comes this week, of course). People calling the first mate inept and "there only because he's Paul's friend". The "if you want to leave when we dock, you're all expendable" speech. And all those things you mentioned. Triple digit engine repair bills?

I am seriously reconsidering my support, RDA or not.

Did they not train the people how to lower the boat first while the ship is standing still? Let them get that down and THEN try at sea, FCOL!

That they would choose to get arrested or to die for the whales, ok. But that they expect each and every crew member to feel the same?

My friend is supposed to go on a mission with them, and ZOMGosh! I'm so scared for her now! And would RDA *REALLY* die for a whale? Hmm.

I have a pretty cautious personality, so it was really eye-opening to watch the show. They'd never let me on board, lol! The injuries people incurred due to lack of training/experience was a shocker. But training takes time, and they don't want to do that, they just want to throw more (human) bodies at the cause. And the repair bills - I was wondering if they called RDA for help then. It sounds like they got the Red Hot Chili Peppers to donate a big chunk.

I will be saying a little prayer for your friend - I hope she's watched the show and knows what she's getting into!

And would RDA *REALLY* die for a whale? Well, a dog maybe... ;)

ROFL!

Yeah, it's um, not for the feint of heart, that's for sure! Yeah, the RHCPs did a benefit, I think? Plus they kicked in 100G? (Aus$?)

I definitely felt like they didn't train and expected people to pick up on what they needed to do on the first go. And that 1st mate... *shakes head* just...no. I really do wonder what RDA's experience on board was really like. And what kind of bunk they tried to shove him into - ;p all 6'3" of him.

I can see, I guess, a cause being very important. But I'd think it would make a lot more sense to use your human resources more wisely than it sounds as if they are doing.

When did RDA visit them, do you know? One of my RDA internet friends is a supporter of Sea Shepherd's, but she's also worried that RDA will go to Antarctica with them, as it's so dangerous and of course he is NOT expendable to any of his fans. Not to mention it sounds to me as if doing something like that would be a foolish risk, with a young daughter still to raise. I hope his love for her will keep him away from a dangerous anti-whaling ship.

My favorite book in defense of the oceans is Diane Duane's Deep Wizardry--a good book, aimed at teens but enjoyable at any age.

I'm not sure when RDA visited them... I bet majorsamfan knows though. Maybe earlier this year? I don't think he'll go to Antarctica, not if he's still going through the foot surgery stuff. You gotta be steady on your feet to be on a boat! :D

I love having you on my flist - former librarian has the perfect book recommendation for everything! ;) *adds Deep Wizardry to the reading list*

Deep Wizardry is the second in her series of books about kids who are wizards. I liked the first one, but really loved this one. I've read several of the following books and liked many of them, too, though the one about computers didn't do much for me.

Is Kalquessa on your flist? She was reading it not too long ago and didn't much care for it till maybe halfway thru, much to my dismay. Mind you it is written for youngsters and I am very far from that, but I found it a good read.

Didn't I read that some Gatecon attendees had said he had talked then about going on the Antarctica trip? And that he had asked Wylie and she said he could go (she should have said No Way!!) Maybe I'm confused, and I certainly hope he will not be going--much too dangerous. I don't know if he's got more foot surgery scheduled, but I don't think his feet are really fixed yet. But that last surgery was so painful he may be in no hurry to go thru it again.

Ah, OK! This is starting to ring a bell now. (And yes, kalquessa is definitely on my flist, that's probably why the title sounds familiar! :) Hmmm, I like a lot of YA books, so I think I will try it... maybe I should ask my nephew if he has it!

You might be right about RDA going... but I'm with you, I hope he doesn't!

The book makes a little more sense if you read the first one, So You Want to Be a Wizard, but it's not necessary, and Deep Wizardry is my fav. of the whole series. Try it, I think you'll like it! (I hope).

I hate to think of RDA being in pain, but if it stops him from going on a dangerous ship, that may be a good thing. No doubt we'll hear at some point if he does go. I thought maybe since he went to that pain event, he did not go on the Antarctic trip, as someone said it's already sailing now. I hope that's right. We want him to stay safe, and get ready to do another SG1 movie!

p.s. Do not look up Deep Wizardry on Wikipedia--they give away the entire plot!!

Okay, I really have to watch them now! I had the opportunity while at Gatecon to talk with a young man who went on the last whale mission. By trade he's a photographer and on the ship he was in charge of communications, which he laughingly told us he knew nothing about. And yes, he did get shot at while having to repair something related to the communications system. He seemed very positive about the whole thing, but then he was young--and a guy--and perhaps the adventure and thrill of it outweighed any thoughts of personal danger.

You know what they lob at the other ships (which shoot at them some sort of concussion grenade type thing!)?

Stink bombs. They save last year's vomit or something, they said, bottle it and toss it on the other ship.
