Amazonians, Oil Barons, McShep, Oh My!

So, a pretty busy weekend for me. Saturday, I worked out at the gym, did like 25 loads of laundry and other house chores, and then Saturday night, crashed the Amazon company party. Well, not really: employees were allowed to bring a guest, so some friends got me in. It was at the Experience Music Project/Sci Fi museum, and The Presidents of the United States of America (“She’s Lump, She’s Lump, She’s in my head”) played. You could also do karaoke, play Rock Band, or check out the exhibits. You got 3 drink tickets, but I actually got 4 free drinks as one bartender was so entranced by my cleavage that he forgot to collect my ticket. Yay, girls! Also, it was the strongest Tanqueray and tonic that I’ve ever had. W00t!

Amazon also had their copy of “The Tales of Beetle the Bard” - five wizarding fairy tales handwritten and illustrated by JK Rowling - on display, which cost them nearly £2 million. My friend M said “I’m not really sure why we bought it,” to which I said, “You should ask your CEO guy, whatshisname, Jeff” (meaning Jeff Bezos). “Is he here tonight?” And of course, he’s standing 2 people away from us. Ha! I don’t think he heard me, whew!

Sunday I was kinda hungover, and did basically nothing until the afternoon when I went to see “There Will Be Blood” (the Daniel Day-Lewis oil baron movie), which was fantastic. DDL is riveting. Horrifyingly fascinating. It’s one of the finest acting performances of all time. I can’t think of another movie where I was so completely mesmerized by a single character. He has to be dead lock for the Oscar.  The music is incredible as well - definitely not melodic, but so forceful and poignant that it’s almost physical, like another character. In the words of Malcom Reynolds, this movie is “morbid and creepifying” but so, so worth the 10 bucks and 2½ hours+.

And finally,
This was not what I was expecting it to be. I was really looking forward to this one - a good John and Rodney show - but it was just kind of meh. I think I had it in my mind that they would be helping this girl because she *deserved* help, not because she was a conniving brat who *demanded* help. And, as gay as our boys may be for each other, they just can’t say no to boobs. And that storyline is getting a little old. Actually, the whole thing seemed sort of tired and recycled. It was a total throwaway ep, like that SG1 Season 10 ep with Vala’s dad. *epic eyeroll* Or basically the rest of SG1 Season 10. Ronon needed to be there to gag the kid and throw her over his shoulder. Teyla need to be there to beat John and Rodney with her sticks. I will admit that the painting at the end was pretty awesome, though. But even that! They’ve already done “Saint Rodney” on a painting - in 315 “The Game”.
