Well, I've wasted most of my night writing fanfic already, so why not waste more time?
I always think it's interesting to hear the music that people listen to when they write. I think it's a good way to get a feel for the story. Thus: Here's a list of everything I've been listening to for the past month or so, whilst I wrote this crazy fic o' mine!
Mostly, it's been all Sufjan Stevens, all the time, since he released an EP and an album in the middle of all of it and I love him to bits and pieces. (Insert Sarah gagging here.) I'll post as many of the highlights as I can find! (PS -- all of these links will be to youtube or tumblr, since my interwebs is too slow to upload songs. If you're the illicit sort and want to keep the songs (and you use Firefox), follow the directions
here for the tumblr tunes.
Because my fic kind of has this apocalyptic strain running through it, I found myself hooked to his apocalyptic songs. Of which there are many.
All Delighted People: I love the entire song, but from the craziness starting at around 6:00 to the end just breaks my heart.
And what difference does it make?
I still love you a lot
Oh, I love you from the top of my heart
The Age of Adz: Cacophonous and delightful.
I'm sorry if I seem self-effacing
Consumed by selfish thoughts
It's only that I still love you deeply
It's all the love I've got
Get Real Get Right: This song is nuts, but in particular, I like the lines:
I know I've always loved you
I know I've always cared
But I must do the right thing
I must do myself a favor
And get real, get right
With the Lord (yeah ignore this last line)
The more general Sufjan songs that I've been hooked on include:
From the Mouth of Gabriel: I almost wrote an entire scene based around this song... I'm so cool.
Your face has changed
I hardly know who you are this time
And what a mess I've made of you
You probably would but I won't let you run away
You probably should but I won't let you run away this time
Bad Communication I'll talk but I know you won't listen to me
Oh, you wouldn't say it but you wanted to
Don't look, don't walk away while I am speaking
I'll take it, but I know it's not for taking
I Want to Be Well And shall I kiss you even as you take me that way?
With the pill or demon as my body changes
Apparitions gone awry
They surround me, all sides
But from within I see an unholy change
(Ok, so I can't really lyrically relate this song to anything, but it's AWESOME and Sufjan says 'fuck', SO.)
Impossible Soul (
Part one,
Part two (From about 10:10 on the first part to the end, and all of part two are my favorite sections of this gigantic, 25 min long song. Yeah, I like the autotune. Haters to the left.)
I'm nothing but a selfish man
I'm nothing but a privileged brother
And did you think I'd stay the night?
And did you think I'd love you forever?
And then you tell me, boy, we can do much more
Together
All Delighted People: from the Eye of the Beholder Compilation album; very different but I love it. Listened mostly to this while I wrote chapter 16. The lyrics don't relate so I won't post any.
God, I love him.
Other delightfully inspiring songs include:
Derek & the Dominoes - Bell Bottom Blues It’s all wrong, but it’s all right
The way that you treat me, baby
Once I was strong but I lost the fight
You won’t find a better loser
Cee Lo Green - Fuck You: Don't question it; my little brother played it for me and I fell in love.
Weezer - Run Away When I'm looking at the night sky, I can see my soul
I see the little lights flashing at each other up above
Is it us making love in the Milky Way
Long before we threw it all away?
Hey, you
We're running out of time
And you know it's true
I just want to run away from here with you
Tonight...
Cartel - If I Were to Write the Song... Can we go back to
The place where we all used to see through
Everything blinding us?
Now you don't understand anything anymore
And you shiver at the signs
And you're afraid to show that
You're only so human tonight
(Lyrics sites have the last line as something different, but I think my interpretation is better.)
Ludo - All the Stars in Texas: I would love to read a super AU BBT fic based on this song... which means that I will probably end up writing it :P
Motel bedside, Kansas sunlight
Tall grass, short dress
Star-crossed hot night
Linens whisper, wrists-held down, love
Your daddy was a crooked soul with his heavy hand
And bourbon cold, I shot him dead
You hopped in, you were the prettiest thing I ever stole
Blur - Coffee and TV: I downloaded the best of album after listening to this, and now I'm in love with Blur, circa 1991-2000.
Sociability
It's hard enough for me
Take me away from this big bad world
And agree to marry me
So we can start over again
What a weird list. It seems far less cohesive when I include the non-Sufjan tunes. But there you have it! The stuff I listened to whilst I pumped out chapter after chapter of cracky sci-fi ridiculousness.
Tired at midnight! As usual, wasn't as productive as I should have been, but I have one last day off!
