Mike and I drove down to Gainesville to spend it with his parents. We ate and opened presents and watched movies together. It even snowed lightly the morning after Christmas. But it melted before it hit the ground. Also, I got some really thoughtful and sweet cards in the mail. Thanks to all that sent me one. Typically I send out cards every year, but things were just far too hectic this year for me to even contemplate making and sending cards.
Anyhow, one of the things I really wanted this year was a banjo. I have been obsessing over them for the last six months or so. Mike ended up getting me the
Epiphone MB-100. Needless to say I am stoked. I finally had some time to myself last night and got to play with it a bit. I installed the bridge on it and practiced some basic "rolls" on it. The first song I am going to attempt to learn is "Man of Constant Sorrow". If you have seen "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" you will remember it as the catchy tune that the Soggy Bottom Boys did.
Speaking of Coehn Brothers, I saw True Grit last week. I cannot say enough good things about it. I am a total Coehn nut, so I may be a bit biased. For the most part I love all that I have seen by them. All the actors and actresses were beyond exceptional. The cinematography was beautiful. And I loved the dialogue and chemistry between the characters. Also, I didn't expect it to be so funny at times, but it really was. I predict Oscar nominations. Go see it if you want to see a good Western.
For now I leave you this song to have stuck in your head for the rest of the day:
