this post is from halloween, 2k4. i'm not going to cut it.
eric and i got to the house where the show was being held around 9. we didnt know if we were at the right place so we asked the cab driver not to leave right away in case we came back out, but once i opened the door and saw jonah i knew all was well. 15 minutes later the driver knocked on the door and jonah answered again, he was coming up to make sure eric and i were in the right place. i was glad i tipped the dude, cause thats really just awesome. the house was so incredible, dark perrywinkle walls and wood floors and a goregous long bronze velvet couch. there was ivy climbing up the walls and some very awesome lamps that looked like fairy flowers, hanging from a branch nailed to the wall. very forresty, very amazing, fantastic energy. tony was one of the dudes who lived in the house and he came out and told us to feel free to explore the back yard, so we did. it looked like a scene out of big fish, there were candles and awesome statues anmd strings of lights everywhere. eric and i weaseled our way into getting smoked out by a dude dressed as the unibomber, mangum pi or some shit, and this other guy who said he was a "new millennium fag, cant you tell?". i severly wish i had brought some weed with me, because i seem to keep forgetting i'm in a place now where people actually DO THAT. a girl named bri sang a few songs to open, and she was dressed as a divorced bride, because thats what she is. my dumb ass thought the big "D" pinned to her dress stood for dead, and that she was a dead bride, and it was WELL AFTER her set, complete with all the "this song is about how much divorce fucking sucks" introductions, and jonah's set that it registered. but really, she was pretty good. after her songs everyone hung out for a while and i assessed the 30 or 40 people there and was pleased to find that the girls-dressed-like-whores to girls-dressed-like-self respecting-human beings ratio was about 1:10. jonah got all his stuff set up, and despite all the drunks in the kitchen and in the yard, and the fact that there were only 8 or 9 people in the room, opened loud, clear, and in all his acoustic glory with his cover of "when i'm 64", which was simply breath taking and added to the already amazing atmosphere. he gracefully wove into the first song on his first album, i dont know the title, but he's never played it the ten thousand times i saw him before, and it is by far one of my most favorite songs of his, and anyones, ever, forever, hands down. i was afraid i was going to start crying or some shit but i kept it together. he played another song from his first album, a few from his newest, a song with one of the other guys who lived there that the two recorded together. jopnah started asking for ideas, and no one really spoke up, so he played another song, and then i managed to squeak my suggestion, and people seemed to approve, so he closed with tides....and revised it a little at the end with bits of the song called smile. i was hella pleased, and it was more than i could ever ask for out of a reunion oneline drawing show. during his set he noticed that the girl whos guitar he was playing had left, and he asked if possibly she was upset that he was beating up her guitar (joke), and then he was told that she had gone to pick up jacob and would be back. now then. in the email i got telling me about the show i read what i thought was a comparison of jacob golden of birthday and bri, but APPARENTLY what the email really said was that jacob golden was going to BE THERE. eric was in the bathroom during all that and i didnt want to bring it up since i wasnt sure what was going on at the time. that comes later. so we go outside, and tony is juggling with these cool acrylic balls, and people are getting us high all over the place, and then we were shuttled intot he basement for tonys band, sounds like fun. they were awesome, dancy and folky and oddly enough, i even sensed a little metal influence, just by the way tony was carrying himself. apparently he learned guitar playing metal. so they were great, and everyone was dancing, although i was dancing nearer the wall because i still felt a little shy, even though that all diminished by the end of the evening. after their set tony announced that jacob golden would be in shortly, and eric turned to me and gave me a "well how about THAT" look, and we sharred a moment of pure happiness but also sharred the knowledge that we had to save our geeking out for when we werent surrounded by people. eric had been talking to a few people about his skills, and was encouraged to get on the keyboard and show off some of shit. and he did, and i was so proud of my bestfriendnospace. he played three songs, including "my" song, and made me blush a lot, and some of his amazing cover of radiohead's street spirit. jonah came down into the basement to listen, and all the while jacob golden was setting his stuff up and rocking the fuck out, and everyone was dancing and watching intently. he got chatted up by this guy named matt who was looking for someone to play keys in his rock band. matt's girlfriend told him how fantastic he is, and i think eric got a ton of supportive energy from these people and i couldnt be happier for him. really though, he's incredible and i think this was just the gentle shove of encouragement he needed to really start considering making a name for himself. jacob came up and played some really mashed-up trippy ambient music with a program called live on his laptop and it was really fucking cool. he didnt sing or play guitar which would have been flippin amazing, but i'll take what i can get. after his set he and i talked for a few minutes about my dads radio station and i fully intend to whore his stuff out to my dad and get him on the air, it will be a match made in heaven. after all that, eric and tony and i were talking, and we found out that good old TONY was in BIRTHDAY and i was just beside myself. we scored an original birthday cd, as well as a cd from the girl who opened, which we bought, as WELL AS a cd that this girl june is recording with jacob. its really good, eric and i listened to it when we got back to my apartment. jacob sings some too so i guess its my moral duty to share this cd with dana, but i really just dont even know where to begin explaining my night to her, because she, probably like all of you, will think i'm just out of my mind and making shit up. june and i talked a little about how she had recently moved from london and how i had just escaped california, and she asked that we exchange emails right before giving me her cd, she said that maybe we could hang out. i called a cab and right when we were in, we started the geeking out and carried on all the way home. so this means, i started making friends (and i would really love to get to know june and everyone else i met better), partied with birthday, hung out with jacob golden, kicked it with jonah...and he gave me a hug..and watched my best friend in the entire universe turn on a room full of people with his skills. i most definetly wish i had a CAMERA to document all this, but for now, and for always, it will be held in my memory and in my heart (aww) as my best halloween...and best so many other things...forever.
ok fools, last night.....topped that. i can't even get into it now. it's too much wonderful.
