what have i done?
this morning i chopped rickey's head with my broadsword during the duilian (pair fight set) class. it was an accident, of course, but it was horrible. he bled so much! we had to take him to the hospital which looked like freddy kruger's boiler room from "a nightmare on elm street". honestly, thank goodness chris made me pack the syringe and suture kit because otherwise rickey wouldn't have been able to receive treatment (the hospitals in china are known not to use sterile needles). anywho, he's okay now. he actually got the wound glued together instead of stitches and received a tetanus shot on the arse.
i felt sorry for a little boy (about 3 years old) who was in the same room with rickey at the hosptial. he had severe burns all down his right leg. i had to leave the room because the "doctor" (and i use the term ever so lightly) just ripped the dangling skin off the boy and burst a blister the size of a golf ball along the ankle, and i started losing my composure. the boy was screaming so loud, and it was, without a doubt, something that would make anyone witnessing want to cry. the family apparently couldn't afford any pain killers or anastisia, so the boy had to suffer this crude treatment. i wanted to offer to pay for any type of pain killers that would ease his pain, but i didn't want to overstep my boundaries. the family was so preoccupied with holding the boy down, and i also don't speak the language, so i was worried i'd distress them even further. still, you always want to do something, anything...
anyhow, the whole experience made me appreciate the health system we have back home. it's not perfect, but it's certainly not anything like what we saw today.
