Character: Light Yagami
Fandom: Death Note (manga version)

Personality: If searching for a detailed example of the axiom that power corrupts, look no further than Light Yagami.

Light is a case study in extremes; he doesn’t believe in doing things halfway. His view of the world is very black and white, with little room for ambiguous shades of gray. Frankly, you’re either with him or against him; if you’re with him, he’ll find a use for you, and if you’re against him, you’ll simply be eliminated. Light has a vision for a perfect new world order, and those who oppose him have no place in it.

It didn’t necessarily start out this way. Death Note begins with Light at age 17, a somewhat arrogant but completely brilliant honors student with a terminal case of boredom and a mind for justice. If he hadn’t picked up the Death Note, he likely would have gone on to accomplish great things for the world as a talented police detective. He would have been an overall good person.

The trouble, though, is that Light did pick up the Death Note, and instead of throwing it away or otherwise destroying it, he let his curiosity get the better of him. He decided to test whether it was real or a hoax, and from that moment on, corrupted by the power of the Death Note, Light became doomed to follow a path leading toward tragedy and his ultimate downfall.

Although the shinigami Ryuk stated he hadn’t chosen Light specifically as the recipient of his Death Note, Light believed he had been hand-picked for task he now saw himself in charge of - cleansing the rotting world of evil. Light obviously thinks very highly of himself - he’s incredibly gifted, in both intelligence and creativity, and, as a result, frequently bored. Moreover, he knows he’s smarter and (in his mind) better than almost everyone else he knows. His ego quite possibly knows no bounds, and his inflated sense of pride is quite possibly his biggest character flaw.

Light is an ambitious perfectionist with a tendency toward a messiah complex, and while he does possess a strong moral compass, it is a skewed one, based on a code of his own making. For this reason, I argue he falls under the category of Lawful Neutral. He envisions a world free of evil, and he sees himself as the only person capable of bringing such a thing to fruition. The fact that in order to do so, he must commit thousands upon thousands of murders, is a minor detail, ultimately negligible in the grand scheme. He fancies himself a god, on the side of right, and opposing him is a transgression punishable by death.

Despite this, Light is not fundamentally evil, or psychotic, or a sociopath. He is deeply flawed - arrogant, frequently smug, and quite immature in some respects. He’s highly competitive, extremely judgmental, and, as we see throughout the course of Death Note’s events, very easily slips into a downward spiral of megalomania and manipulation. He’s terribly cunning, and can be quite callous or even cruel, if provoked by a severe enough blow to his pride. But he did initially have good intentions.

History: Please enjoy some detailed writeups at Death Note Wiki and Wikipedia. n__n

Timeline: Chapter 100, just before walking into the Yellow Box warehouse.

Abilities: Light may be merely mortal, but he is exceptionally talented, in a multitude of areas. He’s a skilled liar and actor, capable of maintaining the flawless front of Light Yagami, model son/student/citizen/police officer, as a mask to his alternate secret identity as Kira, the self-appointed judge/jury/executioner of the world’s criminals. He can manipulate just about anyone with his charm and eloquent speaking, yet he’s subtle about it - too subtle to be noticed. Light is also exceptionally bright - a quick thinker, and a cunning strategist, capable of both executing extremely detailed stratagems and maintaining them over a prolonged period of time (for example, his reign as Kira lasted for six years, during which he also held up the front of being part of the police task force dedicated to finding Kira). He’s fluent in both English and Japanese, and extremely proficient with computers.

Inventory: Just the clothes he’s wearing, and the wristwatch with a hidden piece of his Death Note.
