Reading this makes me think heavily of Resident Evil 4. They essentially nailed every aspect of positive player rewards with that game.

You gain new "abilities" in the form of new weapons, and upgraded weapons that add more intentive ways to get through the game. You get access to very distinct new areas to explore with every chapter. You unfold a chunks of a very good story along the way as you progess. You unlock multiple additional game modes (Mercenaries, which gives you the "Score" rewards, and Assignment Ada) after beating the main game, in addition to the Professional difficulty. And finally you have the additional costumes and bottlecap figures that you can unlock.

Overall, getting all those things right really makes it one of the most satisfying games I've ever played.
