So yesterday I was talking with someone about the Derek Webb cd, She Must and Shall Go Free. This person was telling me that she felt the album was just too much.

In case you know nothing about this cd, I will briefly enlighten you. The cd is all about the Church, and how we should deal with her (the church) as the bride of Christ. He talks about the Church being promiscuous, but Christ still loves Her. He used words like "whore" and "bastard" in some of the songs. In the last song he writes (from Christ's perspective) "You cannot care for me with no regard for Her. If you love me, you will love the church."

So anyway, this person thought the album was too much. I think she took it the wrong way at first, but after I explained it to her she made this comment: "well when I'm listening to a nice happy song about God, I don't wanna hear the word 'whore' pop up."

I couldn't believe I was hearing this. Some Christian bookstores refused to carry the cd because of the "controversial" language. Give me a break. Do these people read the bible? People seem to get too comfortable where they are at, and they don't want to be challenged. God forbid they hear a word with a negative connotation. Blah... again I'm reminded of my disappointment for humans, myself included.

Anyway... I definitely recommend this cd to anyone who is curious about the church and it's significance. Prepare to be rattled a little by the imagery. Derek Webb is an amazing writer, and this album should go down in history as one of the most important albums about the church.
