(yeah, I'm slow. sorry)
We got a slow start on day three knowning that it would be the shortest day, and we would gain an hour as we crossed into mountain time shortly after our departure. As we entered Wyoming I was slightly disapointed with the lack of huge rockey mountains. Apparently they reside in the southern adjacent state of Colorado. Nonetheless, the terrain was pretty, and our travel there gave us an incredible view of four military jets flying in tight formation in practice for some air show.
As we pushed on through the state, the sky darkened as a distant storm was brewing in our view. We stopped for lunch in Rock Springs, WY and were privy to the high winds that would make driving more difficult for a while. It was 4 PM and it looked like the sun had already set; not your road-tripper's idea of a good driving day. As we crossed the state line into Utah, however, the clouds seemed to lift to reveal a beautifully sunny and rocky terrain that was certainly protected from foul weather by the prayers of it's faithful inhabitants.
As we wound our way down from the mountains a gentle bend put us in full view of Salt Lake City far below in the valley. It was truly beautiful. After we got settled in the hotel, we ventured into the city to eat at the Hard Rock Cafe. The food was good, and our drive back to the hotel led us past some nice architecture as we listened to a talk radio program about gay mormons.
The hotel was relaxing, and sleep came quickly as we rested up for our final day of travel.
