I was shocked and outraged to find out this morning that a Missouri IHOP kicked four lesbians out of one of their restaurants when two of them shared an *innocent* kiss

BRILLIANT!!! Our IHOP might be a bit more hardened. They deal with us. Its absurd that there is no federal law protecting people like this, if I am jewish or black I am protected and can not be discriminated against without legal ramifications but if I am gay landlords can deny me an apartment as well as be fired from a job.
The point behind the kiss in is to get attention to the cause. If the IHOP is an asshole about it, it wouldn't hurt...but it's not the point. It's about bringing attention to it, making people think and hoping changing minds, policies and laws.
Yeah...it's terrible. Some of it, thank god, falls under sexual harrassment and discrimination...but not all of it. And that depends on where you are...and yeah. It's horrible.
I think that this was just a case of one predjudiced restaurant manager in one location. It says in the article that the corporate office apologized.
I'm not saying that you *shouldn't* go make out in an IHOP. Any excuse for kissing is a good excuse for kissing, right? ;)
Maybe one day, after that spoiled overgrown chimpanzee is out of the White House, there will be federal legislation protecting the civil rights of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, et. al.
No, wait. I take that back. That statement was very insulting to chimpanzees. I apologize.
I'd agree with you mostly; I'm not sure corporate offices did nearly enough - from what I've read they prevaricated and hedged quite a bit - but I do understand that IHOP is run on franchises so it really just depends where you go. What I can't stand is that there's nothing stopping this asshole manager from exercising his homophobia in a damaging way. No company policy, no city, state or federal law in any way protecting us. It's discrimination and harassment, pure and simple. In some ways it feels almost like exploitation to turn something relatively small into a big deal, but it's is this is one - fortunately now relatively high profile - example of things that happen every day. This article: http://hopeandpolitics.blogspot.com/2007/03/lesbian-ihop-saga-continues-i.html, while not saying anything new, struck me as a particularly nicely laid out description of what gays deal with everyday
( ... )
The publicity is good, but like I said, I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell of any federal legislation getting passed while dubya is in the White House. He's just as predjudiced as the rest of them, if not more.
There are even places in the south, so I'm told, where it's very difficult to get service if you're black, and there ARE federal laws protecting their rights. Sad, but true.
