Two things

1. I went to the gym tonight (relunctantly, like most days) and ran a mile, which I didn't really expect to do. My body feels great.

2. There was more bad pitbull publicity today with the death of a 1 year-old child thanks to his genius parents for leaving him alone with 4 dogs that were probably trained fighting dogs. I love pitbulls. They are probably THE MOST affectionate breed I have ever encountered. Unfortunately they are also THE MOST misunderstood, and the most likely to be abused and mistreated, based on our experience. I would dare say that 50% or more of our hospitalized cruelty cases right now are pitbulls. I kiss the two pups we have in the hospital every day. Thank God our staff are educated and open-minded - these dogs get so much love.

Don't discriminate - educate. Pitbulls shouldn't be banned. People should be banned from breeding Pitbulls. Pitbulls, as all dogs, should be spayed and neutered. So should many of the assholes who buy them for fighting.

Along that line (er, tirade), I recently had a client who had a sweet young Pit that had a broken leg. The owner didn't have much money (like many of our clients) and was frustrated and angry at trying to get help. I spent an hour on the phone with this guy explaining that if we work out some sort of payment plan or help them with finances, that he would have to neuter the dog. He yelled at me, was obnoxious, was going to breed his 'pedigree' Pitbull. Luckily, after an hour, I managed to convince him - I mean, what are the dog's testicles if he needs his broken leg fixed??? Doesn't the dog's health come first? Reluctantly, he agreed to neuter the dog. He trusted me and we were cool after that conversation. He really loves his dog, and the dog is doing great now at home. The trick was that I empowered this guy - I educated him. I dispelled all the bullshit stuff he had heard on the street about spay and neuter, and educated him. I encouraged him to educate his friends and any other pet owners, and gave him literature on why we spay and neuter. He seemed to like that. I truly hope he educates people.

Ah, enough. I'm tired. Off to bed.

XOXO
