Power woes

This morning's storm caused a tree to fall on a power line, causing a transformer fire and a power outage. It looks like it caused something to break in our wiring as well, because when the power came back, magically half of the apartment was still without power. When that half came back, the UPS started freaking out, rapidly cycling between AC and battery power.

It turns out that the voltage on our lines was really low. Merely turning on a light was enough to dim the others and cause the UPS to switch to battery power. With a little troubleshooting at the circuit breaker, I discovered that the hot water heater had to be turned on for the broken half to work at all. So, with a little Googling, I found out that we probably have an open main hot. Joyous. This will likely require an electrician to (properly) fix.
