I was talking with someone who'd never heard that poem before.
"Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat,
please put a penny in the old man's hat.
if you haven't got a penny, a ha'penny will do,
if you haven't got a ha' penny, God bless you."
The fog this morning made the drive into the city seem longer and more dream-like, a kind of snowstorm that just hung in the air. After church I ventured into the throngs of last-minute mall shoppers. It was kind of depressing, buying buying buying, especially since it only just began to feel like Christmas, and when one feels Christmasy shopping is the last thing to do. With all the performances in the last couple of weeks and 2 services to sing tomorrow I feel like I haven't really been able to 'get into the spirit of the season,' if you will.
PLUS, our family didn't watch Scrooge this year. Without Megan to remind us all constantly it got postponed and postponed. So here I sit, wrapping paper all around, Christmas tree lit, glass of wine in hand, watching Ebineezer trying to collect his loans from the puppeteer while the scruffy kids sing 'Father Christmas.' *Now* it's ok - Christmas can come.
I think not caroling in CW made this year feel less Christmasy, too. Funny how just 4 years of tradition can feel so permanent, but Christmas without the green capes and huge baskets of fire doesn't feel like Christmas.
Just too many distractions and too much newness for me to really stop and think about why all this is so important. Traditions are fascinating in that way, reminding us of the real 'reason for the season' in some ways and in others distracting from it. Too much deepness, gotta watch Albert Finney.
sing a song of gladness and cheer,
for the time of Christmas is here.
look around about you and see
what a world of wonder this world can be
sing a Christmas carol, sing a Christmas carol,
sing a Christmas carol like the children do,
and enjoy the beauty, all the joy and beauty,
that a Merry Christmas can bring to you
Merry Christmas :)
