I don't expect much from you, I know you're a show that retcons all the fucking time and I know you abuse your characters with awful inconsistent writing. I know this and yet I STILL expected better from you. This season was going well! Okay, relatively well. Your Jimmy/Chloe relationship was just ill conceived from the start but it looked like you were abandoning that (Jimmy was more interesting as a druggie anyway) for some Chloe/Davis action. MUCH more interesting and I could totally believe it. They had a connection, they had chemistry, and the actors who play those characters just look so pretty together! He was trying so hard to be the good guy and she believed in him. You were even doing well in the beginning of the episode with the relationship. I loved the whole Persephone comparison, the writers have obviously been reading some message boards, but then you just go and FUCK IT UP. Seriously! Making Davis go all jealous killer man??? Making Chloe look like a manipulative liar?? The whole "Oh Jimmy knew me SOO well" bit?? No. Just no. BAD WRITERS. And how does a guy who verbally abuses his ex and begs people he barely knows for drug money go from that to being the freakin' perfect husband/boyfriend again?? It makes no sense. Gah! At least TRY to be vaguely realistic.
I can suspend belief only so much. Clark going mopey "OH NO MY COMPASSION MAKES ME A PUSSY WHO CAN'T DO SHIT TO PROTECT THE WORLD" bit is annoying but it fits with the characterization. Clark has always made a martyr of himself on SV. He ALWAYS has his barn scenes where he most likely writes poetry expressing his most inner feelings in some diary, the cover of which he decoupaged with cut outs from magazines and newspapers. He's probably going to cry in his Fortress now. Or, you know, look introspective while looking like someone put the soft focus lens on the camera. But I'm getting off topic. THAT whole part? I can go with it. I would prefer that Clark grow a pair and have his character actually develop but you can't win 'em all.
I cannot, however, believe that Chloe is that blinded by her loyalty to Clark that she'll fake love (unintentionally or not). I can't believe she would choose Jimmy Olsen (who isn't even the REAL Jimmy? That little trick I was actually okay with because young Jimmy is comic book canon and this Jimmy was annoying) OR that she didn't love Davis. All of her actions pointed to her loving Davis. You had best ret-retcon this next season. When it comes to Smallville, I have an amazing ability to ignore many many things that have gone wrong in past seasons (see: forgetting all of season 4). P.S. What happened to her healing powers? I thought you were gonna pull a healing tears of suck on us when she was cradling Jimmy's dead corpse.
Next character: Oliver. Was he always that big of a douche? He acts holier-than-thou (which was Jonathan Kent's shtick, thankyouverymuch!) and then goes off to "merge" with Luthorcorp. I get that having access to Lex's files would be useful but has he actually done anything since the merger...other than Tess. Oh, I went there. (And way to kill off Teryl Rothery--the ep with the toy maker, she was exploded and it's not like she was a big character, she was just a board member but I like Teryl Rothery!). Anyway, Oliver is now annoying. Just keep him quiet and often shirtless and you can come to my tea party, 'kay?
Davis: Oh Davis. Sam Witwer played him fabulously and I loved the struggle to stay good when the darkness was taking him over slowly. He's a compelling character and I was rooting for him to win the entire season. And then what happens? You decide that he was never going to get redeemed. Oh no, and let's have him kill Olsen while we're at it! Then go for Chloe! Because SHE did it all for Clark! *coughbullshitcough* At least tell me you're keeping SW? I saw that naked Zod (it was Zod, right? Read somewhere that it was Zor-El). Please tell me that he has now taken Davis as a vessel or whatever you want to call it. And then we find out that Chloe's preggers (heard this idea kicked around somewhere but couldn't find it again) with Davis' kid (because she DID love him and what else is there to do when you're on the run? There is no way they spent all that time talking and playing chess), which brings on whole other creep factors because Zod is technically Doomsday's dad, which means he's now the father of his grandson...it would be like an episode of Jerry Springer but with aliens bent on world domination. So pretty similar. I guess I will be watching season 9. Damn you Smallville, I thought our relationship was over.
Speaking of next season, let's see what story lines we've sort of started...Chloe making the present Jimmy got her (how the hell could he afford that?!) into the Watchtower. I can go with that. I like her as Watchtower. I wish we'd seen more of Impulse by the way. Kyle Gallner is one of my TV boyfriends (though not so much when he plays a character with gonorrhea). More JLA heroics plskthx! Then there's Tess and her Magic Zod BallTM. Guess we're going to find out how it was stolen next season and if Zod is going to be played by the wonderful Sam Witwer and what the implications of Zod being back actually are. Then there's Lois being sent to THE FUTURE. I guess she's going to learn A LOT about Clark there. Of course, much of it is inaccurate because THE FUTURE gets its facts from Wikipedia...when it's been edited by people who want to fuck with you. Did you know the population of elephants in Africa is BOOMING?! So yeah, Lois is out of the picture for now. Does this mean Chlois is gonna happen? I doubt it but I can see some people hoping that's the case. What else have we got? Clark going Kal on us. Again. Except this time he won't have a scar to go with the rebellion. Don't you know chicks dig scars? I guess we're just going to have to see what they do now. I mean, it's Smallville so it's always unpredictable. Mostly for the worse. Still gonna watch it because, hey, they didn't kill off Chloe yet and I am an admitted Allison Mack fangirl. Girl can act! In the mean time, I've got fic that is much more consistent with character canon than this past season's writing and often much better written.
Random last comments, how disappointing was the Doomsday/Clark showdown?? Here's hoping that is not the last we see of Doomy and next time there's actual fighting. Next time SV will know better than to blow the FX budget on glowy Zod lights.
Well, I've gotsta meet up with a friend, then apertivo and then we're hitting up the karaoke bar. Madde and I are going to do Spice Girls (I'm voting for "Stop"), Backstreet Boys (preferably "Everybody") or Michael Jackson ("Billie Jean" probably). I may be convinced to do one on my own, which would most likely be "Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai, "Sunny Came Home" by Shawn Colvin or "Stay" by Lisa Loeb. Most people who go are Italian and do songs in Italian. Last time Manuela and I did "Quit Playing Games With My Heart" but I didn't actually know the song that well, just the chorus, and we pretty much butchered it. But in a fun way. Tonight will be better, I'm sure.
ETA: Sang "Stop" with Madde and then "I Want It That Way" with Madde and Madde's boyfriend Walter. But Madde left us on stage. Walter and I kicked that songs ass (yeah harmony!). Walter signed me up after much prodding to do a solo but we left after they decided to take a karaoke "break" and never really came back. Oh well. Next time.
