Well, I've all but given up on getting a job for this summer. I applied to several places and the one place I heard back from (K-Mart), never really followed through past the interview despite my several phone calls to try and figure out where I stood. With me moving into the Mill around August 15th and it now being the morning of July 2nd, I see very little incentive to continue searching. Even if I somehow started somewhere within the week it would only leave me slightly more than a month. While I would love the money, I think I'm just gonna wait until I'm back in Harrisonburg to work agayn. It was somewhat my fault. I waited too long to start applying and that cost me. A shitty job market, particularly for someone still in college with few useful job skills and such, my procrastination and the slim pickings anyway where I live hurt.
But with the rest of the summer I've tried to do some other things. I've seen a few friends whilst I've been home though going out has been cut back due to high gas prices and no real income (aside from the government's 300 bucks which went right into my checking account). I've spent time with my family too because I'm not too certain yet as to how much I plan on being home for summer next year now that I'll have an apartment to live in.
I'm kind of looking for a second couch for the apartment, which will be referred to as either Robot House/Epsilon Rho Rho (a Futurama reference) and/or the Palace of Wisdom (wrasslin' reference). I should make another trip up to Goodwill soon and also check the classifieds. There's some other apartment stuff I'll need, mostly my own stuff for the bedroom so I gotta get to work on that.
This summer I actually opened my own stock account. I only own 30 shares of a Canadian oil company but it's my start at trying to invest and save some money for after graduation. I know, not a fun way to spend money and not something typical of a college student but I don't know what my situation will be in two years and I'd like to have some cushion. I don't want to live too long in my parent's house after graduation. As I earn more money, I'll probably diversify and such.
I've also taken up to reading much more. With no job and not much in the area to do, I have opened some books. So far I've read Can't Buy Me Love, a great book, I think, about the Beatles. It covers the birth of rock and roll, their influences, and the band's rise from a few separate guys in Liverpool to perhaps the best-known band in the world. If anyone wants to borrow it, I'm happy to lend it to you. If you like the Beatles, I think you'll enjoy it. I've also finished A Lion's Tale, an autobiography about WWE wrestler Chris Jericho. Again, a great book if you're a wrestling fan. It follows Jericho's career from when he first wanted to become a wrestler through his journeys in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Smoky Mountain, WCW, and how he inked a deal with Vince McMahon's WWE. If not a wrestling fan then much of what he talks about may go above your head. He writes using terms only fans and those associated with the business would understand. I've also been working on a book more suited for an English classroom, George Orwell's 1984. I've heard it being used to describe some of today's conditions and was curious to read. So I'm about halfway through that and I find some of the similarities a bit eerie.
One other thing I've started trying to do is teach myself how to play guitar. I only started maybe late last week but I'm...trying. It's definitely gonna take work and practice but so far I'm starting to get the hang of the C and G major chords. May not seem like much but it took some work to do. I've realized how little I use my ring finger and how weak mine is. I'm hoping to get decent enough over the next month or so to make it worth bringing the guitar with me to JMU.
In now less than one month, I'm going back to Manassas for a Ring of Honor wrestling show. While nowhere remotely close to the fan that Kevin is, I love the promotion and am excited for this show. The one in May was, I thought, a great show and a great debut in Virginia. I have a feeling that August's show will be even better.
Well, that's all for now. I'm gonna get back to trying to make decent sounds come out of this instrument.
Cheers!
