I got to see my Josh on Friday. His family is from Yale, not far from Port Huron, and he and sister came to town from E.L.
His cell phone wasn't working so he called the Times Herald to reach me. I had a message waiting on my desk phone when I came into work. He was the last person I would have expected to hear from. No one ever calls me at work.
I called his mom's house and talked to her for a while. She's adorable. She said, "Josh has been trying to reach you all day! He was so excited to see you. He thinks so highly of you and that says something because, as you know, Josh is very picky." Awwwww. She also calls me "one of Josh's freshman year girls." hah.
I gave Josh a tour of the newsroom and after work, we went to a bar I hadn't been to, but it was pretty cool. Kind of Barrel-like. Josh and I reminisced about the old 'gang,' where everyone has gone to after college (he's moving to Minneapolis in mere weeks) and all the stupid things we used to do. My favorite Josh/Benita moment was when we dressed up as a 1980s prom king and queen for Halloween 2003.
The best thing he said to me was, "Remember how when we used to go the Barrel and we'd know everyone in there and we could table-hop all night and everyone knew our names, and there was always a table with kids who thought they were cool, but weren't? Well, they've taken over the barrel now that all of us have left and it sucks now. They're not as hip as our group."
I love how we always thought our friends were the coolest kids in East Lansing.
The whole point of this long story is that all those people I would see every day for years, the people I knew I would run into whenever I went to the places we always hung out, the places I would go alone because I knew I would run into friends once I arrived, it's all changed. Everyone's moved on. And it's great. I don't miss any of it. It's great to remember what it was like, and it's nice to run into old friends every once in a while.
