Thoughts on The Winchesters - Pilot
Wheee! I don't like the Boys or Walker but this. THIS. After watching the pilot and a few minutes of Ep 2, I had to come in to write a bit.
At first, the actors, who are a bit different from the original Mary and John, were a bit hard to accept. But then, I began to see cute similarities between this John and Sam/Jared. And I thought of how RL stories use actors to tell their stories and if Supernatural were the RL and someone was just putting Dean's story on screen, this is what they would do too. So that helped.
We know from later eps of SPN that John's dad was a Man of Letters, and that he died helping Sam and Dean in the future. Our assumption, of course, was that John never knew about the Men of Letters... or even hunting until Mary dies in the fire and he started the search. We do know that Michael wiped John and Mary's memories after they met the boys, so but John's memory would have to be wiped before that for him to learn about it from Sam and Dean. It will be interesting to see how they work that out. Either way, there wouldn't be a story if John didn't find out about monsters here so we just have to accept it.
We have Mary telling John that she wants to get out of the life after she finds her dad. In order for this show to continue, she will obviously not... until she gets pregnant with Dean and has all those experiences that the boys were a part of. I am curious as to how long they are going to draw that all out. Mary does still go hunting at one point when the boys were small according to one ep in SPN so we may have some of that too and maybe some eps with baby Dean??? Heeeee.
I LOVE the music. I love the familiar title style - with the MoL sign in it. John's mom running a garage. I love that we have Dean's family theme at one point. I LOVE that John and Mary just bump into each other at the movie theater and that they were both lead to the Men of Letters office on the same night, both searching for their dads. It reminds me of the cupid telling the boys that they brought John and Mary together. I love John telling Mary he thinks he is being haunted and she gets the EMF meter out and also tells him that she also feels the burden of those she wasn't able to save. I like the humor Mary's friends bring into the whole thing, and John telling his mom that this was what he was meant to be. Also, "This is good versus evil; saving people hunting things. I was born to do this."
Otherwise, I am sure there are other weird things about it that I could pick at, but I'd rather just enjoy the show - finding things I can tie in with the boys, while also accepting the differences. Let's see if the good stuff lasts.
