13-18 Bring Em Back Alive - Thoughts and Screencaps
I’ll be rating this one awesome again! I am not usually very happy with the boys being apart, but that is usually because one of the boys doesn’t get the focus. This time, they seem to have gotten equal focus and seems to me the writers have done a really good job of it. It reminded me of the way they did Who We Are. There were a lot of thoughtful scenes, funny scenes and oh boy that last scene was just so heartbreakingly awesome.
First, I really loved the snow contrast with the rift. Beautiful scene. I reallly don't know about Ketch. He seems like he he really does want to be redeamed but on the other hand, if he gets hold of Jack, he might change his mind. There is definitely an interesting story here and I really do love it when there is that kind of struggle in a character. It reminds me of Bella and of Meg #2.
Anyway, then seeing Charlie! and other resistance on the bridge, Dean being shot, Ketch’s rescue, Dean rescuing Ketch (wow that was quick - I thought his hands were tied.) Dean forcing the bounty hunter(?) to tell them where he was going to take him was very cool.
I also thought it was significant that we had two choking scenes this ep - one by Michael's angel toward Charlie, and one by Lucifer toward Anael.
The scene here between Cas and Sam was interesting too. Dean wanted to go alone, Sam says (AND YOU LET HIM?! Says Cas :D) - not Dean thought it was best if we split up or something like that. Sounds like Dean has a special reason to want to go alone. But, why would Dean want to go alone? And I can only be reminded of the trials when Dean wanted to do them alone and wanted Sam to live. It really fits this situation too, as we saw Dean being really protective of Sam last ep. Why all of a sudden is he protective of Sam though? In Good Iintentions he also left Sam to take care of the prophet, but I can't find anything in particular that could have triggered this. Maybe we will find out later.
No Cas, you don’t coerce someone into drinking their own grace, dummy. I love him laying his hands on Gabriel though, interesting that we’ve had Anael saving Lucifer, and now Cas saving Gabriel - lower Angels giving Archangels strength.
Then watching Dean trying to go on with a poisoned wound *facepalm*, Ketch convincing him to let him help him (heee, bare shoulder, panting Dean ❤️), finding out that the resistance in this AU have weapons like the MoL had in theirs,
KETCH: Do shut up.
DEAN: How's it look mom?
Then a scene with Cas jolting Gabriel's mind.
CAS: Gabriel, it's possible he's lost...
(I like that - he is implying both that he has lost his mind and also he has lost to Asmodeus.
(Love that scene ... we need some angry sex fic - Definitely a Bella vibe from Ketch.)
Gabriel’s little biography on the walls was hilarious! What a nice thing to leave behind though, aye?! To have a room in the bunker with Gabriel’s story written all over in Enochian :D “Yeah, Gabriel stayed here once” they’d say to guests of the Hotel Bunker :D
SAM: Why isn't he talking to us?
CAS: I don't know. Maybe he can't.
SAM: Maybe he's choosing not to. Maybe he thinks it''s safer that way.
(And yes, it looks like it was.)
I liked the Lucifer scenes too - especially the ones with Anael trying to get him to do something for the angels, for humanity and for the world, he dressing up in a suit and sunglasses LOL
and meditating on the lotus flower like throne (I finally see the significance of that throne- what with combining Christian God with Buddhist enlightenment and having to be enlightened in order to deal with this world) and Lucifer trying to be the good guy in helping pastors with their demon exorcism,
LUCI: Fellas
DEMON: Oh crap
(The demon will go back to hell and tell everyone where Luci is I suppose?)
Then OMG Sam with Gabriel - Sam’s I need you speech, telling Gabriel he has been in the same place (with the family theme in the background) gave me tears!
Gabriel you have to dig yourself out of this hole. Look, I know you think it's safer in side No more torture, no more pain, no more expectations. I've been there. You are nothing like your family. You sure as hell weren't like your dad. Me either. And just like you, I got out, or I thought I got out. But then, then my family needed me and this is my life. No matter how many times I try to fight it. This is what I was put here to do. This is where I make the world a better place, and sure, yeah, hookers and Monte Carlo sounds great. But your family needs you. Jack, your nephew, needs you. The world needs you. We need you. Gabriel, I need you. So please, help us.
GABRIEL: Pornstars. They were pornstars, Sam.
(ASMODEUS: There you are...)
OK, so Gabriel using his grace is what alerted Asmodeus. If Gabriel had kept silent, he would not have been found. But, if Sam and Cas had not given him that extra grace, he would not have been able to kill Asmodeus… or did he? Not sure, but at least he burned up his suit LOL
Then very importantly, the little talk between Dean and Ketch about their secrets - How Dean feels for Charlie(Gaaah), and how Ketch feels for all those others he did not help for the sake of duty.
DEAN: Charlie's not going to give the angels what they want
KETCH: Your Charlie wouldn't
DEAN: The angels are going to kill her 100% And I'm not...
KETCH: What? What's your story.
DEAN: Charlie is like family. She was like a sister to me. She did more for me and Sam than I could even say and she was butchered. And I couldn't get there in time.
KETCH: You feel you failed her.
DEAN: I know I did.
KETCH: That I understand.
DEAN: Alright, what about your story you're not telling me?
KETCH: Oh I have had many failures Friends and collegues who have died on my watch. The only difference is, I didn't try to save them. Duty and all that. Rubbish.
DEAN: Well you do suck.
KETCH: What the hell. Perhaps, rescuing this Charlie will wipe some of the stain off my hands.
DEAN: Impossible and stupid huh? You say that like it's a bad thing.
Charlie is antagonizing the angel and still hanging on but will be killed in the morning. Gabriel has been given his grace. Asmodeus gives Sam a call. I'm not quite sure about Asmodeus being able to get into the bunker... Doesn't seem possible to me.
Then again the speech by Anael about how Lucifer is blaming God for everything but he really can’t do anything and doesn’t really even want to find his son because he is scared of what Jack will think of him.
ANAEL: Finding your bliss? So humans don't like you. Oh wow. I'm sorry. Instead of bellyaching about it why don't you make heaven right? Make good on your promises? Make angels. Give the existing ones their wings back.
LUCIFER: Yeah, I can't really do that.
ANAEL: WHAT?
LUCIFER: I lied. So just keep that to yourself OK?
ANAEL: So you know, It's not the humans, it's not the angels. It's not your dad's propaganda that's killing you. It's your complete failure. You say you want to find your son but you don't, not really. So you sit there because you are afraid. You are afraid of him. Afraid of looking into his eyes and seeing nothing but contempt. You can't replace your father. You can't create anything. You have nothing. You might as well go back to the cage.
So, Lucifer is running and hiding just like Gabriel. Very interesting also that Lucifer does not kill Anael and Anael probably knew he wouldn’t. If I were her, I would be counting this a victory even though she said that now he had lost her too. The fact is, there will be chances for her to change him still.
Such good insight. All three - Dean and Ketch, Lucifer, and Sam and Cas scenes had some really good speeches as I said before.
Then Dean and Ketch saving Charlie -
Gabriel saves Sam and Cas.
Dean has a talk with Charlie about how he used to know her in the other world, and how his mom and Jack are there. Charlie tells him they are fighting the angels somewhere. Then both Ketch and Charlie refusing to go with Dean because Ketch thinks he can redeem himself in this new AU, and Charlie will not leave her friends of course.
CHARLIE: Why would I believe any of this?
DEAN: Because of that.
I really think that Mary and Jack might have the same feelings as Ketch. That they can do something there in that AU to help. I had this thought that they really don’t need to be saved or necessarily want to be saved at this point. Like Charlie for example:
CHARLIE: I'm staying too. Dude, this is my home. My friends are here and they are in trouble. If you really have a way to take down Michael, get back here and do it. Until then, this is my fight.
DEAN: I don't want to lose you again.
CHARLIE: That’s not your call.
I love that. Charlie's life is not his responsibility. What she chooses - or chose - to do was her responsibility.
SAM: Welcome to the team
GABRIEL: Ahhhh, yeah... not so much. I mean, thank you for the rescue and for the redemption arc but I'm not really a team guy so I'm gonna bounce. ... Last time the world was ending I put my money on you. I think you can pull it off.
I was seriously wondering what would happen if Gabriel turned all family minded and wanted to help them.That would have been super weird. Why didn’t Sam realize that Gabriel would not want to have any part in it? I don’t know, and I feel sorry for Sam and his expectations but sounds good to me. Love Gabriel saying that last time he put his bet on the boys and he was not disappointed :) That’s the theme of this season isn’t it? That it’s the boys that are holding this universe together. I’m also excited about just seeing Gabriel once in a while now that we know he’s not dead. Maybe we will see the Trickster again too 😆
DEAN: Gabriel's back. Where is he?
SAM: Gabriel left.
DEAN: What do you mean?
CASTIEL: We asked him to help us and he said no.
DEAN: We still have his grace, right?
SAM: We used his grace to save him.
DEAN: If we can't open that door, then I shouldn't have ever come back.
CASTIEL: Dean, we will find Gabriel. We will.
DEAN: We'd better.
So we have people like Sam and Dean and AU Charlie that just think it’s their life to save the world, then we have Gabriel who doesn’t want any part of it, then we have ones like Ketch and Lucifer that want a second chance (or not). A lot of choices this ep.
I hope we don’t have Sam thinking that Dean would have rather been in the AU than there with him. His point obviously was that he should have stayed there and concentrated on saving mom and Jack instead of coming back all by himself.
But I do think Dean is also missing the point as I said earlier. Dean is all depressed that however close they come to saving their loved ones, something always goes wrong, but I think they should be focussing more on protecting what they have there. Mary and Jack can take care of themselves and maybe they will end up stopping Michael from trying to invade on their side. And somehow get back on their own. *pets Dean and Team Free Will*
