OK, so what did you think of this week's episode?? I'd love to hear it in the following poll and/or comments!
Poll SPN 12-20 Twigs and Twine and Tasha Banes My thoughts -
First of all I loved that this ep dealt with the BMoL vs Winchesters storyline (You'd hope so, it's episode 20!!). There was a lot of good suspense both for Mary and for Sam and Dean. There was a lot of good stuff about what one would do for family - REALLY good stuff. Dean sensing that Cas was not himself, makes it less likely that baby Luci will be good and makes me very sad for Cas because, come one... he doesn't deserve this *headdesk*
All the family stuff though was pretty heartbreaking - both because it reminded us of Sam and Dean's childhood, and because of what happens to the poor witch, Max, in the ep, and what he inevitably does... which of course mirrors what Dean did in Season 3. So, I'm just going to try to go through scene by scene to catch all the goodness as it happens, but man... it's going to be hard.
First of all the MoTW stuff where mom gets killed, and so we know when we see her again that SHE is not MOM. (A thought flitters through my mind here... Mary IS Mary... right? and then another thought... the BMoL torture could make her into something else too... :()
Dean and Sam are biting their nails. This is an awesome scene in itself :D But they are worried for Cas and Dean is saying that the baby is controling Cas because that wasn't Cas talking.
SAM: If we want some shot at finding Cas, we have to... I don't know... try and think like him.
DEAN: How? Seriously? I mean up until now, if Cas messed up... if he did something wrong and he thought it was for the right treasons, I got it. But last night, when I looked at him, I did not recognize the guy staring back at me.
Then Sam brings out the colt, which is not all melted like I thought it was.
DEAN: Think you can fix it?
But... even if they can fix it, it shouldn't work on Luci's baby should it? It didn't work on his dad...
Then they get a call from Alicia and Max on one of mom's phones. Alicia is worried about their mom who hasn't called in on the fourth day like she usually does. She's been missing for a week. Max's not worried. He thinks he knows his mom better than Alicia because they have a connection as natural witches. But hearing the worry in Alicia's voice, Sam tells them they'll go and help.
After the call, Dean tells Sam they should be concentrating on finding Cas but with no leads, they've done all they can for now and this one line by Sam convinces Dean.
SAM: Their mom's on a hunting trip and hasn't been home in a week.
And we are reminded of the first scene in the "THEN" where VERY young Dean is telling Sam that Dad is missing. WOW what a flashback aye? In that case, Sam wasn't worried, but Dean was, and Sam went for Dean's sake(GAHHHHH... my heart.)
After they decide to go, Dean is reminded that he hasn't talked to Mary in a while (as well as the fact that Alicia could not contact her on her other phone) and gets worried about her, leaves her a touching message - just call and let us know you're alright... (GAH...) Awesome scene of Shapeshifter in Mary's form as Ketch tortures her!! Got us so worried for a while that Mary was in dire straits! (of course, now she really is...)
When Sam and Dean get to the siblings, we have a nice siluette first of Max and Alicia by the lake side, then of Sam and Alicia while Dean shows Max Baby's trunk.
Alicia and Sam have a conversation about how Max and their mom have a connection, Sam says that Dean and dad had a similar connection as "natural hunters" (and the heart squeezes for Sam) and then about Mom and how she "vanishes," a remark by Alicia about mom and how she doesn't seem like the "hugging" type. (again heart squeeze at Sam's smile) And a thought again flitters through my mind, maybe Sam and Dean were lucky Mary died when she did...? Or maybe she USED to be the hugging type but again, she somehow isn't the Mary she used to be? hmmm... I feel like there should be a correlation between the witches' mom dying and being resurrected as a doll with her memories... and Mary dying and being resurrected by Amara. Anyways,
Back to the story - they go to the hotel she was staying at and voila! Alicia and Max's mom's there and everything is ok! WHY DON'T THEY TEST HER FOR SILVER or SALT or.... ANYTHING???! Seriously, guys, if a hunter disappears and then reappears, always check! Alicia and Max sure aren't very practiced hunters. But everyone is so relieved she is ok, they just go to her room and start drinking wine -
- all except for Sam who goes out to get the food from "the vegan place" and gives his wine to Dean. There he finds a missing poster for the spooky guy they saw outside.
Meanwhile, Mary and Ketch have been interrogating the shapeshifter. Well, Ketch has been torturing the shapeshifter and Mary doesn't like what she saw. She tells him that she's never seen this side of him before. Important point here is that Ketch was torturing the shapeshifter to betray it's family, which Mary knows it would never do. The torture is totally meaningless. We have a telling line by Ketch here:
KETCH: Anyone that tells you that torture is never the answer? They've never been under the knife.
HE OBVIOUSLY HAS. HE has been tortured, and broken. I think we are going to find out more about his tragic past, but for the time being, he is a psychopath.
After this little talk, finallly Mary is suspicious of Ketch and Mick's disappearance. Ketch leaves her telling her to call Dean back and she does,
MARY: Dean, I'm sorry I haven't been there for you and Sam. But I want to be. I will be. But I just, I need to finish this. I miss you boys. I love you.
...but she also goes to spy on Ketch making himself at home at Mick's desk and phoning someone in GB about a box he's going to send over.
We have another family moment as Dean watches the witch family talking happily and checks his phone for messages, hoping his mom had called. Love the light of the fire on his face<3 Mom-doll (doll-mom?) notices and asks if he was expecting a call, and then they have this talk about mothers.
TASHA: I did the best for Max and Alicia. I got lucky.
DEAN: I see how you are with them, alright. It's good, you know. They're happy.
TASHA: Alicia said you grew up in the life?
DEAN: Yeah, my dad raised me and Sam to hunt.
TASHA: And your mother?
DEAN: It's complicated.
TASHA: Yeah. Family's always complicated. Parents always seem smart and strong and perfect. It's only when you grow up that you realize, they're just people.
Mary, meanwhile, checks e-mail for a message from Mick under the eye of Ketch. She finds a message and finds it odd.
Sam comes back with the food and calls Dean out. He tells Dean that there is something wrong and they go -Dean leaving his cellphone behind, which makes him miss mom's call but also was probably a good idea considering he'd not have wanted it to ring in the middle of checking out something dangerous. The only thing I wish is that they'd stop telling each other to call them back when something is wrong and just tell eachother what is wrong RIGHT AWAY.
OK, creepy old witch making a doll-person.
Sam and Dean find the basement which is filled with dead people, including the real mom's body. Max goes out supposedly to have some "man time" with the bartender" but instead finds Sam and Dean and his dead mom.
LOVE how Sam and Dean try to stop him from seeing the body. VERY sad scene. The music... everything very well done. So very heartbreaking.
Meanwhile Mary finds Mick and tries to get out of there without being noticed, and finds the spy room and then Ketch finds her, STILL she almost gets out but WHY DOESN'T SHE KNOCK HIM OUT???!
The death of his mom almost makes Max give in to the witch's deal, which reminds us of Dean in Crossroad Blues.
Thankfully, Dean gets her with his witch killing bullets. But the death of his sister...
GAH... RIGHT? AHBL all over again :'''''( Everything, from blaming himself to getting rid of the boys so he could sell his soul...Except, he doesn't really reserrect her. It's just a doll with her memories and body (that fixes itself). And he now has a bunch more power but has his soul promised to hell just by putting the ring on.
SAM: You did the right thing, Dean. You saved him.
DEAN: Yeah, he seems super saved. You know I was watching them, this loving family, the kind we should have had. and now just like that, it's gone.
SAM: Dean, you couldn't let Max make a deal for his soul.
DEAN: Sam We do terrible things to save eachother. I mean, that's what we do for family. Who am I to stop him.
SAM: He's strong. He'll be alright.
DEAN: Yeah, I'm not so sure.
Max puts on the ring, and brings back his sister by cutting out her heart and putting it in the doll..
Dean listens to Mary's message while Sam sleeps. (Why did you wait, Dean :() He hears the importance in Mary's voice and calls urgently to Sam sleeping peacefully beside him :'''''(((((
MARY IS CAUGHT by the evil bitch. I think they are going to try and break her :'''(((
GAH...
