My thoughts -

Awesome! That was a really really fun episode. Not funny like the last, not all of it anyway, but I love the hospital, Mother Hildegarde, Bouton, and all the healer parts of the episode especially. That is another one of the big reasons I really enjoyed the books (as well as the humor as I mentioned last episode). I also love the mention of historical figures and we have another one here as well - our German composer Bach :D

The title "Useful Occupations" of course not only refers to Claire and her work at the hospital and even her little tea parties, but also Jamie playing chess with the Minister of Finance in order to get a favor from him. LOVED the guy telling him he gave him permission not to respect him so much and let him win once in a while if he wanted a favor LOL

The little scene with Mary Hawkins in the beginning was hilarious ... until Claire finds out about where she'd heard Mary's name before, of course *heartache* Which reminds me though that Jamie is of course avoiding "having marital relations" with Claire because of his nightmares, and now Murtagh knows of it because of his little affair with the maid (lol). It was very interesting to see Jamie all grumpy and realize that it isn't just because Claire wasn't there to help him when he got home.

OH BOY and FERGUS!!!! Heeee!!! Love Jamie's little wrestle with him. So looking forward to seeing him more!

I'm going to pick some of my favorite screencaps and see if I remember anything else I particularly liked.

So here's Jamie all busy with affairs of Kings and Princes, and Claire feeling all useless and like she is becoming more and more like "the lady of the times" with nothing to occupy her time but tea parties.

CLAIRE: They're not my ladies.

CLAIRE: I believe we need to have a little talk...

MARY: Men don't do things like that where I come from.

LOUISE: Where is that, the moon?
(hehehe!)

Johnathan Randall marries Mary Hawkins...

Claire remembers where she had seen Mary's name before.

I was faced with the terrible knowledge that Frank's very existence now depended on Jack living for at least another year.

CLAIRE: I'm living a lie
MURTAGH: You're keeping a secret to save his life.  ...I'll be keeping that secret with you.
...
MURTAGH: Now... if you don't mind, I have some business with your maid to finish.
(LOL)

(Jamie suggests the Maison Elise as their meeting place and the Minister quite likes the idea :D)

MASTER RAYMOND: None of them (volunteers) are as perseptive as you, or as in need of helping others.
Claire is so happy to be able to do something <3

I took a moment to recall the 18th century term for diabetes.

("Relief and shock" at the news that Charles has "most of" what he needed to finance the war.)

Jamie at home, frustrated.

CLAIRE: I need a purpose.
JAMIE: When do I get to feel good? When do I get to find meaning in my day?
I see this question as much more than just dissatisfaction with Claire or with his own "work."  But it's not because Claire is not willing, nor is it because he is such a gentleman as Mary Hawkins believes LOL.  I wonder how he's going to be able to deal with those nightmares - and how Claire might help him with that.

Jamie has a good idea ;)

CLAIRE:That's a  good plan.

JAMIE: Thank you.  Well, goodnight.
Still a bit upset... :P

Jamie's days with Prince Charles

Claire's days with Mother Hildegarde.

Awwww! Finally!

JAMIE: I need help.

CLAIRE: Johann Sebastian Bach?

Jamie notices Claire's reaction and wonders about this Bach person<3

MURTAGH: You need to tell him.

JAMIE: We still have problems to solve, but we'll solve them too.  To Mother Hildegarde without whom our enemies would remain unknown to us.  To my wife, who is always there when I need her.

CLAIRE: I just love seeing you so happy.
